How is it possible to fill the seats of a theater or auditorium, such as the attached image of a product by PerspectX?

The way I usually do that sort of thing, if I don't need to get right up in their faces, but still have them look good from a decent distance is to use Predatron's LoRez people.

The two main products: Loretta and Lorenzo have multitudes of options available from ethnicity, dofferent face morphs, clothing... all done cleverly within their base products. But they don't hold up that well if we get too close - without some clever enhancing on our part.

They also come with some decent poses to get started and do pretty well with Genesis 1 and 2 poses as well as V4/M4 poses with some fixing to do for the feet. Genesis poses work better for that.

Since I animate, I make partial aniBlocks for the upper body - a whole slew of them - that I can layer in with 'seated' poses. This can make an audience look Alive - which works really well for selling an audience full of people -and we don't need to get close to their faces. If we do, we sun in a Genesis 1 figure for the closer shots. Genesis 1 can get pretty LoRez and has multitudes of possibilities - but their footprint within Daz Studio far exceeds Lorenzo and Loretta.

Some audience chambers like that have selectable seats - making placement easier. But truly - placing a few LoRez figures into seats is easy. Do about five or so, seated withinn their seats or standing next to them, etc., then create a Node Instance of them and plunk that somewhere else - matching the positions of the seats. Add a few individual versions to break things up, and then those can be instanced as well.

I've also used the Low Resolution versions of M3 and V3 for this, but nowadays I have a really good collection of Predatrons LR figures, and I love how they are to work with - many extra pose dials built into them. Police, monks, ordinary citezens (Loretta and Lorenzo)... etc.,

In this short car chase scene, there are eight or nine Loretta and Lorenzo figures instanced to achieve over 109 people walking around the city

This one has three Lorenzo, one Loretta, a Male Police and a Female Police in the background, breathing life into the city

Wow! That would work great for stills. They're not articulated so animation would require something like Mesh Grabber, but then they wouldn't be lightweight anymore.

But for stills - they come with a chair - a chair which can be hidden. That can really help in positioning them quickly - then hide the chair.

If you check out how the LoPoly people are laid out in this product, that's exactly what I do with Predatron's LoRez people - and they're all posable!

Depending on the angles you are planning to shoot, I'd still probably composite the scene together in a photo editing program and not completely fill all seats and render at once, even with lo-res figures. Using depth of field would help a lot.

For the distance shots in this scene, ILM used painted Q-Tips with fans blowing at them underneath:

@Dartanbeck and @Charlie Judge  Thanks to both of you. I do have the lorez products from  here and will probably pick up those Charlie pointed out. It will take some work posing and all, but I think a great project for some upcoming winter days.
@PerttiA .. I was wondering about reducing resolution of the actual figures, but for sure the clothing textures, etc need to be reduced as well. Another rainy day project.

I just really appreciate that Protozoon's Colosseum comes with its own billboard crowd. I don't own Flipmode's MMA Arena yet but it appears to also come with an audience. I wish more PA's would think of things like that. Crowds are such a hassle!

...too bad there wasn't a more well dressed "Now-Crowd - Audience" billboard set appropriate for venues like Protozoon's Recital Hall, the Royal Opera Stage set, and the Golden Hall.

One of the many things I love about using Genesis 1 for such things. I have a plethora of costumes, shapes and textures, and it's pretty easy to reduce them down to being pretty light on their feet.

Being a collector of aniBlocks, I have no shortage of seated poses(animations) to use on them!

I have wondered too, I would think a combo of procedural generation of low poly combined with instancing - sort of like used by Howie Farkes in his Ultra Scenery

At least two of Greenpot's older products in the Renderosity store come with seated LowRez people in basketball stands (https://www.renderosity.com/marketplace/products/98614/stadium-basketball-court) and in a school theater (https://www.renderosity.com/marketplace/products/84596/school-theater).  I have those products, many of Predatron's LowRez people products, and I have LOWREZ People Sitting for Daz Studio on my Renderosity wishlist.

I will need to start over to do more including reinstalling Poser because I lost everything in a drive crash earlier this year but maybe one day

...the nice part about the Now-Crowd Billboards is they are very easy on system resources, particularly older hardware like I have.

The Golden Hall is based on the Musikverein in Vienna where she performs at in a hioghly important scene..

Besides "bodies in the seats", I would also need the orchestra ("classical" era around Beethoven's time which varied between 35 and 40 musicians plus the conductor). Using even low poly figures for that alone would likely require more processing resources than my system has.
