Genesis with Carrara

Hi,

I'm going crazy here :)

I want to use Genesis figures with Carrara 8.5. I can load them in, but without any morphs. I can't apply Poses. Carrara says that an error has occurred. Eye colors are also NOT possible, but Bumpmaps and e.g. "Phillips Armpits" are possible. If I load the DAZ Dragon 3, it works find but without any Morphs. However, Morphs work fine in Poser 2014.

Now, I'm not quite sure what the documentation center means with this phrase: "Carrara 8.5 has the ability to read both Poser content and DSON format content. This means users will need to add both their Poser runtime(s) as well as the location for their DSON Content." Well, I thought, Carrara is able to read Genesis content natively!? What about this DSON format content?

So, any ideas here? I use the DIM to install content to this folder: C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library.

Best wishes,
Thomas

  • Actually, you need to load Genesis with .duf extension, which is Studio's format of choice, and sh.

I have used Genesis 1 and 2 in Carrara 8.5 Pro with no problems. Morphs and pre-canned poses worked and everything. I don't have the computer that I ran C8.5 on anymore, and my old system isn't able to run C8.5, so I'm afraid I can't be much more help, except to say that you need the .duf formatted stuff and not the Poser versions.

Having said that, The older Poser style figures work great if loaded from a standard Poser style runtime. The .cr2 files and such load natively, although you will probably need to tweak the shaders as Poser and Carrara use different render engines and some things don't translate quite right, such as Highlight and Shininess.

Regarding the eye issue, I have heard of it, however, it never happened to me, so I don't recall the fix. One possible fix maybe, is that if you bought C8.5 Pro, it comes with Carrara optimized shaders for Genesis (not sure about Genesis 2).

Simply select the Actor from the figure's heirarchy, look at the top of screen above the Instances palette and you will see a bunch of tabs. Choose the Shader tab and you will see a list of the model's (Actor) shading domains, with a large multi-colored ball at the top of the list. Find the Carrara Skin shaders under the Shading Browser and drag the icon for the shaders from the browser and drop it directly on the multi-colored ball in the Actor's shading tab. Carrara may think a moment as it loads the shaders. Hopefully that will help with the black eyes.

Just to give a little proof (and maybe some hope), here's three renders using Genesis 2 in Carrara 8.5. The first render, with the two models in more modern attire is using the standard, image map based skins that loaded with the figures by default. I was presently surprised that the translation of the shaders from the .duf figures didn't really need any tweaks. The last two (fantasy style clothes) renders are Genesis 2 as well, but instead I used a non-image map based procedural skin I built in Carrara before my system crapped out. You can see the morphs are different on the figures, and while both poses have been modified, I loaded poses from the browser, and tweaked them for the scene.

If you are new to Carrara, the following thread may have some helpful information for using genesis and genesis 2  (not gensis 3).

Sorry it is not in any logical order.
