When applying a normal map, the left and right sides get different shade. Any suggestions on how to solve it?

Is this something you made yourself or a third-party product? I would suspect it was made one one leg, then mirrored and the surfaced normals were not inverted for the mirrored piece - you could try selecting one leg with the Geometry Editor tool, just roughly will do for a test, then right-click>Geometry Editing>Flip Normal of Selected Polygons and see if it then matches the other half.
