Blessings to the Smothers family, friends, and community. I have wonderful memories of the Smothers Brothers, as I am sure many people of a certain age do. In addition to their musical talents, the brothers were an excellent comedy team, with Tommy playing the part of the dumb/naive/foolish/innocent clown. That particular form of the comedy duo is a dying art form, if not dead, but it was once incredibly common - if not the norm. I encourage people who are not familiar with the Smothers Brothers to seek out some of their performances. I suspect quite a few of their jokes may not translate well because it was often targeted at the issues of their day, but their theme of a desire for mutual tolerance and desire for peace should resonate strongly. The jokes that depend on misunderstanding and double meanings are timeless, and they themselves had reinterpreted from Gracie Allen and George Burns, or any of a number of earlier duos. RIP, Mr. Smothers, and thanks for all the laughs.

When you think about The Smothers Brothers and the legacy now being carried on by today's generation of comedians and musical artists, they are the inheritors of a long tradition.
