PD HOWLER 9.5 Discussion - important to get Carrara users thoughts before purchase

I posted in another thread about creating difuse and normal maps on 3d characters and props the other day.

A mention was made of Howler, which I am interested to know more about.

I would appreciate to read any information others are willing to share. (Good or bad)

The Howler is on sale at 55% off today... this should be a good time to buy it.

Currently, my specific interest is to create diffuse and normal (bump) maps by drawing/painting directly to the 3d character or prop.
Then export from the application in obj, fbx or other standard cgi format.

Looked through the referred thread...looks like a bunch old postings. Nothing about the newer releases.

You may have better luck with a plugin called Baker, by Inagoni.

Howler doesn't have any sort of 'paint-on-3d' features that work on imported 3d models or anything like that. It does have its own 3d tools, but nothing like what your quote in blue is looking for.

I've looked here and your other thread on this subject and haven't seen any responses regarding trying Carrara for this. Have you tried it?

Where I'll use Howler is after I've done my 3d painting in Carrara. In Howler I can get much more accurate with colors and details, etc.,

Also, since we've talked in your other thread, I've gone to the 3DCoat website and watched some video regarding painting in 3d and it really looks to be worth its weight. I still need to check out Allegorithmic... all in good time.

But it sounded to me (from your other thread) that you were going to try the Baker method. You sounded pretty enthused!

That sounds right up 3d-coat's alley, it does what you wrote in blue it has a free 30 day demo to try, it has a home version which is limited to 2k maps and a full version.  it supports layers and all kinds of things.  3d-coat.com here is a video from their front page on the 4.5 release and painting in PBR materials I didnt have time to dig up the videos on painting the diffuse and normal maps but there are a bunch.  I think its Stu has done a lot with it.
