Any PAs can model regular everyday cars and trucks?

davesodaveso Posts: 7,024

I think it would be great to be able to put some regular cars on my streets. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Honda, Toyota, and on. All ages from about year 2000 on to new. Pickup trucks, delivery vans, emergency vehicles, semi-trucks, step vans, etc etc ...
Not all scenes need a souped up sports car, a $200,000 car or truck, and so forth. Need some beaters, cracked window, crumpled up front fender, all the goodies. A vehicle that has different conditions where you can place a crumples fendor for the perfect one. A fleet of different vehicles that look reasonable but are lo resolution for medium to farther scenes too.

There are one or two "generic" cards/trucks in the store. Any branded one would immediately have to get slapped with the "Editorial Licence" which won't make it too popular.

There used to be a thread about that in the Freebies section (When it was called the "Freepository")...(which I understand was a portmanteau of "Free" and "Depository" not "Free" and "Suppository" which was a wild rumor spread by someone who definitely wasn't me)...

If you aren't doing commercial renders, there are a bunch of free ordinary cars on ShareCG... Rendo has a few decent non-free ones too.

Vanishing Point has some early 2000s emergency vehicles... not sure where you can find that vendor anymore though.

yeah on the editorial. i guess they could be made similar but not a clone, and with a different name ... or no brand name at all.

They're at Rendo. They still have their website store too.

It's probably quite tricky as even if you leave the badges off and try to avoid copying any real car then it may still end up looking close enough to something that it gets the EL applied.

I assume you have seen these (or they are not suitable for your needs):

No doubt there are others I don't have (or missed when I looked). A few others I didn't mention as they are more UK/Euro based or a bit older than 2000. Does seem to be an absence of ambulances tho :(

You may already be aware of them, but TruForm over at Renderosity has a reasonable number of modern cars and vans, some of which even fall into the "affordable" range.

They're Poser format, so need some shader updates to shine in Iray (but will load), and there's no easily crumpled panels, but they do include useful features like being able to open up the back, (the number of car models on the store with the back welded shut - I mean, I can understand not wanting to model an entire engine for the front, but models really are better if they handle all details of standard day-to-day operation like being able to load groceries), and I myself like them because they're *reasonably* easy to convert to right-hand-drive to be UK cars.

I stayed away from the lo poly as they are all SUV style. The RedCrow units passed on as they are basically all the same model. I was thinking of just buying the sedan. The rest I do have. I've been looking for a stable of regular cars for quite a long time. They're not easy to find. There is one site that has a lot of free ones in LWO or MAX , but it always seems something happens. DMI Car 3D Models (dmi-3d.net)

I see Poser and go right by usually. I might have to look closer.

I did also forget to mention https://www.daz3d.com/traffic-patterns-script-and-prop-collection which has a larger variety of low poly objects.

However, it would indeed be nice to have a greater variety of "every day" vehicles for use in close-up renders.

I'd certainly generally ignore Poser format for characters, but for "hard surface" props the rigging usually imports into DS in a serviceable state, so if they have a good mesh they're often a very viable substitute for native DS format assets. And there's surprisingly few decently featured low-to-mid-range cars out there that aren't *too* much work to get into DS.

The foreground cars in both of these are from TruForm's store:

But yeah, Poser format vehicles can be pretty usable - for a somewhat more niche example, DryJack at Rendo has done a heap of British heritage railway buildings and rolling stock, which I combined with some of the railway stuff Dogz has done (this time on this store) to create a model railway for a scene:

(And yes, because I'm a complete dork, the models have all been exactly scaled down to a proper model railway scale, I didn't just eyeball it).

...there are several shader resource kits for vehicles (for both Iray and 3DL) here that can be used in place of Poser materials.  Ir working in 3DL remember to also remove any reflection maps that may be present as they look terrible in Daz. .

As to RH drive the dearth of vehicles is a pain ( a good part of my story takes place in the UK).  The quick fix is to set scaling to -100%, however that also reverses the textures so numbers and lettering text on both the indeed and outside read backwards.  To correct this requires prep work (if you intend to save it as an asset for future use)  or post if it's just a "one shot".   The way I f do this is copy the instruments from the LH version  and paste them to the new RH one (which can be a bit tedious) and save it with the notation "UK". If the dash is a separate mesh it makes things a bit simpler, but if not, you will also have to this for outside details like marque name, licence plate, and any other lettering such as on a delivery van..

if there's a specific model of car you want, can usually find them as obj online. Obviously need to set up shaders and it wont have door rigged doors/steering wheel etc.

Poser vehicles are very easy to import into Daz. It's just quite a manual work in setting up the materials, but they tend to work well.

Daz and Poser character scale is very much the same so you don't have to worry about rescaling.

I would not call Cybertenko or Michael_C vehicles "everyday" ones, but they are complex models with moving parts and converting them to Daz never caused any difficulty on my part.

  • for what it is worth, the Zirael flyte comes with both lefthand drive and right hand drive variants, and is largely based on a mix of two different model years of the subaru outback. And yes, we don't use real world badges/makes/models because these are trademarks and we do not wish to infringe on anyone's intellectual property. And I will likely never sell anything under an editorial license. And both the rear hatch and front hood/bonnet open. It does not have a cumpled panel/bumper morph though. However it comes with dirty material options that make it a little less pristine. I'll keep the idea for dents and stuff should I ever make another vehicle though. The issue with that is that crumpled panels and bumpers need more geometry to suport all the little details. Which makes the vehicle more heavyweight. It's not an impossible limitation to overcome, but it requires forethought and planning to reduce the impact.

    ...thank you.

A bit displased that the last three Daz+ vehicles have an Editorial Licence restriction.  Just means fewer D+ items available for purchase.

Truform over at Rendo does a nive Merc Sprinter Van model. Only problem is that it's Left Hand Drive only, and the 4 spoke badge looks odd.

Truform does offer two of the cars free if you want to download and give them a test drive before dropping any money on the other cars.

What I would like to see (and maybe these are already available and I haven't found them yet) are everyday vehicles with minimal details that could be parked on urban streets. I have a few urban environments, but they're completely devoid of parked cars, giving them a "ghost town" look. These would be background props or at the most somewhat blurry vehicles in a render. They could be almost generic shapes: cross-over SUV, sedan, picku-up truck, van, etc. I wouldn't want them to be recognizable models of actual vehicles. The idea is they would be light-weight props, little more than forms, to add to a scene.

This car is free on "Turbo..." if you have an account there. Now the ".OBJ" format is the one you would download so it will probably give you a bit of grief with the texture zones and such, something which I do the lazy man's thing on <insert deep bow> - I render like three or four separate layers one for the body color, a black one for the tires, glass for the windshield etc. and then I simply combine the layers with postwork.

You can also get pictures of the car you want from your region's highway department say or even from the manufacturer's web page. Make a multi-layered image file with a transparent base, then paste in the car picture. Cut away the background. Now render your SCENE of a road or landscape, or city street etc. after rotating and angling it to match the position of the car! Heh heh.

First Bastion's Deserted Roadway scene is a good candidate model for experimenting with "near" and "far", eg. like they teach on Sesame Street. </DUCKS>

Edit: I could have sworn that I uploaded a picture of the free car. It must have rolled off the forum!

You can find their cars on their website: https://inlitestudio.com/3d/product-category/free/ And yes Truform and Inlitestudios are the same vendor.

Ah, I thought the cars were on Rendo, too.  I had a bunch of the everyday cars in my cart on inlitestudios for over a year to see if they'd ever run a sale over there.  Realized recently they were on Rendo and took advantage of their Black Friday sale.

The cars are in pieces.  It makes it a bit of a pain to get all the pieces if you want to change a texture.  On the other hand, it makes it makes it easy if you want to move/remove parts of the car.

My favorite is their VW Golf "Everyday Car" and it's free too! The styling of Golfs has not changed very much over the years so this one can fit into renderings of various time periods.

I also just had to pick up their "Toyoka GE" ($10) since it's based on the Toyota FR-S / Subaru BRZ twins and there's one of those sitting in my laneway right now. laugh

These low poly SUVs fall into exactly that category. Lite on details and polycount,  and hence you can place dozen and dozens of them into a scene in the background without a major hit on render times.
