Installing 3rd party content in Daz 4.8 (Windows 10)

So, I did a clean install of Daz 4.8 after being away from the software for a few years.  I have used the DIM to download and install Gen3 figures and some other items specifically for them; However, I also have tons of content for Victoria 4.2 and want to use her as well. For the sake of a clean install, I repurchased and installed V4.2 and it works fine.  the problem is that when I "install" third party characters for Victoria (such as Danae's characters), they do not appear in the content library.

My step for "installing" these third party is as follows:

I have a folder called Daz on an second internal drive that has all of my runtimes and such.

I unzip the product folder and then dragged the data folders (runtime, render presets, etc.) into DAZ and do a merge.  This is the method I used to use in the past and it worked fine.  Not this time.

I also did a "refresh" in the right click menu of the content  library to no avail.

Any idea what might be going on?

Thanks!

Before you do anything else, get a refund. You never, ever need to "repurchase", everything you ever bought from DAZ, even long ago, is still available to redownload in the Product Library store page or through DIM as long as you're still logging in with your old account details. "For the sake of a clean install" means nothing, if you need to redownload, you redownload and that's it.

If you've never used DIM before, it uses a different default content folder location than old D|S versions — D|S still uses it's own default, and the two programs do not talk to each other. If you also have old content in a separate location, that also will need attention.

I also did a "refresh" in the right click menu of the content  library to no avail.

That won't help if D|S doesn't know about all the folders your content is installed into.

Open your Content Directory Manager (Edit>Preferences and click the button at the bottom of the Content Library tab) and open the sections for D|S and Poser Formats. Make sure the content locations that DIM uses and your old content folder are both listed here. Also, make sure the same locations are listed under D|S and Poser Formats. You might need to close and restart D|S before the changes take effect.

  • Hi. thank you.  With regard to the refund, unfortunately, I long ago lost access to my old DAZ account.  No longer have the email it was attached to and forgot the password so no way to recover it.  I ended up just creating a new account.  But, thanks for the advice!

With regard to the third party content.  When I installed DIM, I set up the install folder as the same one that I am now attempting to transfer files to.  This is .... R:/DAZ on my computer.  The content manager shows "R:/Daz for both DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats under "Current Directories" Content Sets.  Now, if I do a "Browse to file location" with content installed by DIM it goes to the appropriate folder within R:/DAZ.  For example, Karen 7, which works perfectly fine is found in the appropriate locations in R:/DAZ.

So, my assumption was that if I transferred/copied the third party content data files to R/DAZ it would work fine as well and they would appear in the content library.  Is there something I should do after transferring the files in the content directy manager.  For example, my "New content set" is empty and nothing checked.

It might be worth trying a support ticket to the Help Desk.

It's not recommended to put existing old content into a content location controlled by DIM. There's nothing wrong with having multiple content locations; most people use one for DIM content and one for old or non-DAZ content.

As far as moving content goes, though, yes it is as simple as that. The only point it might get complicated is if you were using the Smart Content database; all the links will now be pointing to the old file locations, so the database will need to be fixed or rebuilt.

I'm not sure what you mean here, the CDM doesn't transfer files, it only creates links to the folders so D|S can find the content. Can you post a screenshot, with all the different format options opened to show the content folder path settings?

  • As requested, here is the open content folder paths.  What I meant with the poorly worded responses was whether I need to do anything in DAZ studio once I have transfered files?  Any particular option that needs to be checked or any sort of "refresh" that needs to be done.

Thanks for the advise about contactings the help desk. I'll do that. Can't hurt.

So, would you suggest that I create a new folder for non-DIM content and transfer the data files into that?  If so, I assume I would then need to add that location into the CDM system?

    Thank you again!

If you use Smart Content then the database would normally need to be rebuilt; but I just remembered your old content might not have been using it anyway. Did you have anything like customised categories set up? You might need to recreate that.

Yes, that's all there is to it. Note that the empty "New Content Set" you have shown isn't really needed and can be deleted. You don't need a new content set, you just need to add your old content paths to the existing one. Click on the D|S Formats and Poser Formats lines one at a time, and click on the Directory>Add button. Navigate to wherever you put the old content and accept that. Remember that D|S Formats and Poser Formats paths must be identical.

It's been a long time since I last did this myself, I think you should close and restart D|S to make sure the new paths are properly picked up.

  • Just wanted to come back and say thanks for all your help.  I finally got it working!  Much appreciated.  :)
