I always have problems creating a good-looking surface in the front area. Often it all seems a bit vague and out of focus. Stones don't work well. I think I need some better distplasment maps, where can I find something like that? or how to create a path with stones and furrows with Terein editor or or...
It's just a matter of how best to approach it.
The pictures were taken with Midjourny, which often serves as inspiration for me

I use multiple terrains foreground and background ones, the foreground one is always much smaller so more detailed
I mostly use Octane render which does very detailed textural displacement but Philemo's phong tesselation plugin works well otherwise
+1 to a foregrund terrain distinct from background terrain.
On paths, I used an image editor to generate 2D images to be the base terrain heightmap, and the related but separate base replicator distribution maps in the following project. The project was to create a landscape for a graveyard that could be used as an establishment shot. The maps can be found here.

There are 5 or 6 related maps attached to the post. Creating the related maps was not difficult in an image editor with the layers function.
Here is a Work-in-Progress.
The above landscape has several zones. Some are for raods and parking lots for cars. Some are paths for people to walk on. Some are for trees. Some are for clearings for gravestones. There is a black and white distribution map for each separate zone. The following color-codes the zones so that they can all be seen on the same map.
There is also a plugin specifically for roads, paths, and rivers. I don't remember off hand which plugin creator made it, but if Wendy or someone else can't point to it, I can find it.
i'm looking for the plugin.. found only for Windows.. Mac?
Found what I was thinking of here. https://www.shapemagic.com/roadmaker/
The webpage says Windows only.
Sparrowhawke on his Patreon site has been dabbling in Terrain and River plugins.
@Khoe I've just tested this roadmaker with WineHQ on my Mac (macOS 10.12 Sierra and 10.13 High Sierra) and it just runs fine. But I'm not sure if it will work on your Mac.

There are test reports that indicate that it runs on Sonoma. my Carrara runs with Parallels as a simulation under High Sierra.
I only have Montary in the company at the moment. That should work.
