Saving camera angles

I keep on finding myself finding the perfect angle I want to render at, then do the render and my lights are wrong, so I have to go back out, readjust the lights, then spend a lot of time trying to get back to the original framing of the scene. It seems like there must be a way to save a viewing position, but I can't figure out where it is or how to search for it.

Are you using an actual camera or just using the default 'perspective' view?

If you aren't using an actual camera, then you should.   That way, you can flip between the camera (which should be left at it's 'perfect' position') and the perspective view.

  • What exactly do you mean by "go back out"? Even the Perspective View ought not to change or reset in between successive renders. Are you just cancelling the render and closing the render window?

Creating a new camera is still important, though; Perspective View is exactly what it says on the tin, it isn't a Camera, it's a View. Proper Cameras have all the normal camera controls, all of the Views don't.

When you have your "perfect angle" with the perspective view, go Create-New Camera-Copy Active View, and then switch to the new camera.

Or better still don't use the Perspactive View at all and use a real camera instead to set up your scene. I think every Daz user as been through this issue when they first started using DS. It was the first lesson I learnt in DS. Cheers.

  • You can have an unlimited number of camera angles in a scene.  As mentioned simply :  Create-New Camera-Apply active viewport-perspective view.

You then use the drop down menu to choose the angle you want to use.

  • OOHHH. Thanks!

  • Honestly, I had no idea, I thought they were "Video" cameras and used only for animation purposes. They certainly look like video cameras, so I've just been ignoring them. How do I get rid of the crosshairs though, that's really distracting...

  • oh they aren't crosshairs, that's because I have more than one camera in a similar spot, so I'm seeing the grey lines of the other camera in my view, which I do know how to take care of. Thanks for helping me out!

Is there a hotkey for shifting through all the cameras one by one?

FWIW, I almost always make my scene cameras invisible, unless I want to see what the camera field of view looks like from another wide-angle viewpoint. All you need to do is go to the Scene tab, select each camera, and click on the little "eye" icon. (This is the same function as the "Visible" switch in the Parameters tab.)

You can also lock your camera view position once you decide it's at the perfect angle. If you click on the Camera -> Parameters -> Options Box -> Lock Selected Node.

Something I've taken to doing is to have DS create a 'Default Camera' every time I start a new session.  From the Edit menu, select 'Preferences', then select the Scene tab.  In the "On 'New'" group (the first one on the pane), set the checkbox for 'Create a "Default Camera"'.  Click 'Apply' or 'Accept'.

After that, every time you open DAZ Studio, or select File->New, a Default Camera will appear in the scene.  Jockey it into your 'ideal' position and viewpoint.  The camera's position will be saved, just like any other scene asset.

One of the things I can't figure out is why that behavior was changed.  But the create default camera used to be the default on loading a new scene.
