    Things to bear in mind:

Ensure that as you are usign Iray light rigs that the render engine you ar eusing is Iray and not 3Delight.

Bear in mind that Iray is 'physical based', which means that unless there is a way for the light to get into the room it will be dark.

Try hiding the room for a test (click on the eye icon in scene tab) and do a quick test render and see if you can see lights that way.

Double check...are you using Iray to render?

Chances are if you are not, the lights won't work.  Some of the 'standard' lights may give some light, but more often than not, in 3Delight they won't work at all.

Second, if you are using Iray, what are your render settings...specifically are you just rendering 'dome' or 'scene'?

What are the tone mapping settings...by default, they are set for a bright, sunny outdoor render (the default HDR environment map that loads).?

  • i know, i always keep it on iray , simonjm, the thing it when i click on a light and set it where it needs to go, shows a big spehere where the light should bee from what i see, dome i belive do i need to change it? all the stuff is default i dont know the lights enough to change it unless i need to know something any help would be appreated

  • i put them up and put up the intensity up to 150 or so and  the room is dark

That's why — Intensity is a 3Delight light parameter, it won't do anything on an Iray light. Adding to the confusion, Iray lights have two relevant parameters, Luminance and Color Temperature (the exact parameter name depends on which kind of light you're using, but it's obvious which is which).

Adding even more to the confusion, remember that the Iray renderer has a default environment light, which you will have to turn off if you only want your added lights in the scene.

  • spotted how do i turn the envrolight off?

  • Open the Render Settings tab, click on Environment, and change the Environment Mode at the top from Dome And Scene to Scene Only.

Note that, depending on which kinds of lights you put in the scene, the preview Viewport lighting might become very dim or go completely dark (not all Iray light types show in the Viewport, which uses the OpenGL of your graphics card). Use <ctrl>-L to toggle the preview lighting, which works pretty much like the camera Headlamps, but doesn't render.

  • thank you very much spotted
