What does the Progressive Aux Canvas do?

Hi all,

I've read the changelog, the Iray thread highlights and Googled a bit, but I still don't get it --  can anyone help me understand what the new Progressive Aux Canvas option does that's come in through the latest changes?

I've read around, but I just can't find a clear explaination of what it actually is!

The only thing I've seen is a recommendation to have it on when doing toon canvas renders. I haven't seen any general description or discussion about it.

To me, the main difference of On / Off is the numbe of samples that each pixel on auxiliary canvas will receive while rendering. For Post Denoiser / SSIM, and Toon canvas type, keeping it On is recommended by Nvidia.

on page 51, there's an explanation, simply.
