Is this a bug or some other problem with the "orbit" tool.

I use the orbit tool constantly. By orbit tool, I mean the colored box in the upper right corner of the viewport. When I drag on the box, the active camera, usually perspective, orbits around a point.

Every now and again something strange happens. The moment I put the left mouse key down, the scene jumps to bottom view, looking straight up. Note, I am not clicking on the tool, but carefully putting the key down and dragging. At first I thought it might be a bounce error in the mouse key. After all, clicking on the bottom face of the cube will in fact reproduce the same effect. The problem is that it happens when the camera is angled down. The face labelled bottom is not visible and therefore not selectable. So, it is unlikely to be explained by clicking on the bottom face.

This used to happen on 4.7. Can't remember it happening in 4.8, but could be wrong. Currently I am on 4.9 beta.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

  • Has it happened in 4.9? I think I recall some work being done on rotations, which could give odd results when close to +/-180 degrees (which you woudl be on at least one axis when looking down).

  • Thanks for writing back. Good thought, but unlikely. I was not clear when I said looking down. I only meant that the camera was tilted down, typically 20 degress or less. Enough to obscure the bottom face of the cube, but not enough to be anywhere near vertical or the dread 180 degrees.

It seems the problem has subsided over the last hour. Perhaps it is something intrinsic to the one scene. It does not seem to be happening on another scene I am working on.
