i was thinking about buying some buyt i dont knoqw how to use them can anyone give me any ideas on how to do it so i can  learn how to before i buy one

    you stick them on environment spheres to provide image based lighting

    iray uses them on your environment  dome and so does Uberenvironment in 3Delight

    you can hide or show dome

    but primarily they provide image based lighting as they are 360 images with metadata so the light and shadows on your figure etc in the centre mimic those of the original photographed or rendered scene as if it were there.

    HDRI images have a wide enough dynamic range (the range between lights and darks) to be able to be used to provide lighting information.  Basically they are a light source for environmental lighting.  A bonus is that they can be, if of sufficient size and resolution, be used as backdrop images that are also matched to the lighting.
