Thin film applications?

So, other than making oil on water effect or bubbles, what else can thin film option does?
Could it be used to makes snow/frost/ice effect? I have tried to use it on G8F skins and the results were disappointing.

Iridescence is the main thing it's for. The term "thin film" doesn't refer to just any thin layer of something, but specifically thin film interference, the optical effects created in a thin transparent film when light rays bouncing around inside it interfere with each other. This is so specialized that I don't think its off-label applications are extensive.
