Carrara 8.5.1 just crashes

Some of you may know I had a major Mac Meltdown over the Christmas hols, resulting in me having to install the whole kit and kaboodle from scratch - totally fresh install of El Capitan on a totally fresh hard dtive . . .

Three days later (which included much swearing!), and I've redownloaded DIM and run through the install for Studio & Carrara. Reinstalled some 3000 content packages (zzzz), rebuilt the CMS database in Studio, assigned all the correct folders. Run and registered Carrara 8.5.1 . . .

Then I come to open my WIP project. Immediate crash to desktop.

Okay, open something else. Immediate crash to desktop.

Start a new scene. Immediate crash to desktop.

Browse the smart content and content trees. Click on something . . . Immediate crash to desktop.

I think you may see a pattern. Carrara is fina, as long as I don't actually try to *do* anything. crying

Help!!!

This is the stack trace, if it's of any help:

  • Ouch.  What are your machine's specs?  From what you've suggested, I guess you didn't have a Time Machine backup or something else (Carbon Copy Cloner)?

Make sure all of your important files are backed up.  Twice.

I am not a geek by any means, but the log you posted is hinting about a clock error.  Go to System Preferences and make sure your clock and date are set correctly.  Years ago I reinstalled or something and had the system date set to 1971 (I have no idea how it chose the date it did).  Suffice it to say, lots of things didn't work too well.

Also, did you downlaod the same version of Carrara as you had before?  Postgre or whatever or before?

    It's a 27" iMac, late 2012, 24GB ram, i5, 1GB GTX650m. 1TB internal, 4TB ext USB3. Time Machine is on a second ext USB3.

Everything was backed up to time machine, and the really important stuff on a cloud drive too. The initial problem problem was that the machine would crash to reboot every 10 minutes, even with nothing running. A restore from time machine just brought back the problem (presumably whatever was causing it had been backed up too). So I did an Internet restore from Apple's servers, redownload apps etc. Data was still restored from time machine, although I let DIM rebuild the content libraries, mainly for housekeeping. Machine is now generally much faster and more responsive. Other apps (including DS) are working fine.

I had 8,5,1,19 before, and 8.5.1.19 after, and yes, Postgre was up to date.

Sytstem clock is correct as far as I can tell (it shows the correct date/time on both clock and file timestamps, and in prefs.)

Ouch. Wracking my brain trying to think of something to help... all I could come up with so far is a great big: "Arrrrrrrgh!" as your frustration seeps through... Oh Man....

Just out of curiousity can you run Carrara 8.1 that does not have CMS?

While I might not know much about computers let alone Macs it would help eliminate the CMS Data base as a cause.

It also can be a corrupt or wrong version plugin file, I have had that happen on my PC

  • Don't know Macs, Windows only. However I did a total reinstall over holiday period, using DIMs from Daz site.

After doing that I got "an error has occured" message has occurred just after Carrara had opened, and the only thing I could do was close Carrara down!

Tracked down to Fenrics ERC plugin, uninstalled that and Carrara worked again. It used to work OK, but was installed via executable the last time. Decided to leave it out for now since I've not really used it since first installing. Something is obviously wrong with the new DIM installer. Try removing that.

My problem's not quite the same. Carrara loads fine. The menus all work. The browser works - I can browse content, smart content, native content, my objs etc. It's only when I click on some content to load it, or try to open a file, or create a new scene that it goes away (no error, just a vanish to desktop, followed by an Apple crash alert)

Don't have Fenric's ERC, but I do have Fenric's Shader Doctor. It's not an immediate suspect, since I don't get a crash on startup. But it's worth taking it out just in case. I did have some Sparrowhawke plugins, but I haven't reinstalled those.

  • Good to know everything is safe. This is a head-scratcher.

Have you checked the App Store app for updates that may need installing even though you just fresh installed?

A pain, possibly, but you could unsinstall everything and then just install the minimum to see if it works.  Then add a few things and check again.  And so on.  Then you can narrow down the culprit, or whether it is the app itself.  Before you delete you might also want to drop Carrara onto something like AppCleaner and take a screen shot of everthing that gets listed; after DIM uninstalls, make sure everything on that list is actually gone by searching.

Are you sure you got the 64-bit version?

Also, you could re-re-install everything again from the servers on down, just don't bring in your data from TimeMachine, install Carrara and see if that works. You could have a data problem with your library.

Just thought about the folder where Carrara store stuff temporarily but actually eternally.  It could be bloated, but I don't know if that would cause your problem.  Mine is showing as DazTMP.  Double-click your HD, then Users, your User folder, Documents and then Daz3D and you should see it (or double click your HD, then in the top right search panel type in DazTMP).  This needs to be emptied from time to time.  Click on the folder and then choose in the menu bar FILE - GET INFO to see how big it is.

You hit it! Kinda sorta indirectly, but you hit it. The Daz3D folder was one of those I restored -- for all the stuff I had saved under "My Objects". I checked DazTmp and there were a few old renders from when it crashed some time - I do clean it out periodically. Anyway, I tried to delete them but they wouldn't go. So I pulled up the Get Info dialog.

    They were Read Only.

Seems that Time Machine restored the whole folder as Read Only, don't know why, maybe some user account thing? Anyhow, I made it Read Write across the board, and restarted Carrara . . . Magic! It all works. Files open, birds sing, the sky turns blue (acually not so much the last one- it's still peeing down outside).

So, Carrara crashes if the temp folder is read only. Who'd a thunk! Cheers chap, I owe you a beer. yes

That's good to remember. It makes sense though. If Carrara can't write scratch files and such to the chosen folder, it would cause a conflict. It would be nice instead of crashing, it could throw up an error saying it couldn't open a scene or do anything because the temp file was read only.

    Guess what?

    Yup.

The Mac crashed, and now when I try to open the file I was working on......

At least it's not quite *that* ininformative, but it's close!
