Weight mapped push on a geometry shell?

Hello All,
I have a project where I would like to put blood on a knife, so my thought was to create a geometry shell, give it 0% push and a blood shader, then just paint the blood where it needs to go with a weighted push map. I can imagine many other effects I could apply this technique to.
All went well until I tried to add the weight map. It let me do it, but I don't get the slider to set the push, I can't select the shell in the viewport, and the paintbrush doesnt see it. I tried blindly to convert the shell to Triax and other formats I don't understand, no joy.
Is this possible? If not, any other approaches to try?
Thanks in advance

I can't even get the map to add. I don't know if this is the intended behaviour or not, it seems reasonable as the shell is a copy of the base but on the other hand we are modifying it with the bare Push Modifier - you might open a Support ticket to ask if no one else can give a definite answer.
Richard, Thanks for your reply, it does help to know that I'm not overlooking something simple, and that perhaps it should work. Slight correction to my description, it didn't add the map as you also saw. But the add map button was lit, and it didn't complain when I hit it, just nothing happened. So it sounds like we see the same thing. I'll look into opening a support ticket.
Thanks again
