Why does Daz insist o0n putting items like this (a nice item) that will not work in daz Studio on the freebie page? Are they selling poser and not telling me?
Comments
It is very old - a Zygote product by its folder names - and the Tiff texture map isn't importing correctly, so it needs to be opened in an image editor and resaved - but it does load and pose in DS on a quick test.
It doesn't help with Penguin but for future reference.
A number of older items (as late as Gen4), free or not, that work in DS don't include Daz Studio under Compatible Software. For quick checks before carting or checkout:
(1) Look at the promo images for "Daz Studio Render."
(2) The What's Included section may list Daz Studio presets or mats (material files).
(3) The text blurb may mention DS. Example: "There is no longer a separate Daz Studio installer..."
Note that these items will most likely install to the Poser directory in DS.
Seems to work fine in DazStudio. Little bit of tweaking with the textures required.

I know that it is an older product, And I do not expect Daz to give away new stuff (Thanks for the gen 9 stuff btw) but the poser items as well as lots of old textures are a problem for the less tech savie and newcomers. (textures because I now have lots of textures for old products from when I was new and got every freebee. Mostly just a rant about a pet peeve.
I'm not that "tech savvy", but I can use this out of box and love when they give stuff like this away. It's much better than the zillion texture add-ons they give away for old products I don't have and don't want. At least with cute animals, I can use them when needed. This is a quick render OOB (no updates to textures):
Even a beginner should be able to figure out how to use the pose controls. @FirstBastion also did a nice image on the beach!
I've always been of the opinion if someone gives you a gift, be grateful.
The wings are shwoing the issue I mentioned with the Tiff file, though. I would open it in an image editor and resave (as Tiff or another format) then apply that instead of the supplied map.
haha, I didn't even notice that! Ok, so as you suggested, I opened the tif file in my photo editor and exported as png. Here's the fixed version! It's still kind of low quality, but you could probably improve it without too much trouble if you wanted a north pole scene or something like that.
...
Can't hear or read the word "penguin" without thinking of that sketch! In fact, I have a novelty dollhouse scaled TV that plays Batman sequences (wanted the Trek version but was never locally available) with a Schleich brand penguin figurine standing upon it on my computer desk.
I saw Penguin and thought 'book'. But I have put the little guy in my cart and he can occupy my zoo scenes. Thanks DAZ.
i thought of this!

...I actually had a wooden penguin sitting on top of my television years ago. It was the television that blew up causing the penguin fall off but the only "injury" was a broken foot that was quickly mended. He now sits on a shelf one of my bookcases (books tend to be a little less prone to unexpected detonation).
If your book detonates, you probably shouldn't have been reading out loud from it (or you need to check your pronunciation).
...and you REALLY shouldn't have had a wooden penguin on top of it at the time.
You oviosly have no cats. Btw, can someone fix a big hole in my wall? When she ripped it down she did a lot of damage. She doesn't like her new diet either.
I'm still angry about when after one Christmas dinner, one of the family genuinely said "so what's on the television" and the decorations meant I could legitimately deliver the line "Looks like a penguin" and they all missed it.
The penguin is very old (sku: 346), but still beautiful!
It is a useful and lovely gift. Thanks DAZ!:)
The wings shouldn't be like that, though - open the Tiff file from the textures in an image editor and resave it.
Peeves don't make great pets but then again neither do penguins.
I don't even know why I grab the free textures for outfits I don't own or want but I do...
Thanks Richard Haseltine for the instructions to fix the texture .tiff file!:) I tried with various programs (opened and saved, with Paint and the photo program included in Windows), without results, but finally I succeeded with Gimp which allows you to import the extra channels and convert the sRGB profile that is embedded in the image (following the instructions of the software itself), then saving the correct copy in .tiff. I'm not sure what extra channels and sRGB profiles mean, but it worked well!:)
