Harpsburg for DazStudio

OK, so this was nearly finished over a year ago but I got completely distracted by a different (read better paying) project. But I have now found some spare time to continue my education in DazStudio by porting Harpsburg from Carrara.
In the intervening time however Studio has acquired an aditional render engine that requires extra shader/material work (sigh). The attached render is straight from Studio using 3Delight.
Will hopefully be uploading in a few weeks.

just to increase your headache, I know at least one Poser user who would love it ......but then he does have Carrara so could pull out his finger and use that and export it too
This looks really nice. I have Hapsburg for Carrara, but haven't actually figured out how to use the program yet. I play with DS more. If I already have Hapsburg, would I need to purchase again? Will it be separate from the other product or an addon or will it be bundled as an update? Not sure how that works since they are technically two separate programs.
Studio version will be completely separate product. You shouldn't need to purchase the full Studio version - likely a bundle of the 2 will be available and greatly discounted for existing customers of the Carrara version.
Oh man, I don't even own Poser so the likelyhood of a Poser version anytime soon (from me) is extremely low.
do not fret hardly anything in DAZ store these days has Poser versions and your model exports nicely from Carrara to many apps, I even use it in iClone
Looks good - I love the Carrara version.
Generally the only reason I like a Poser version of a set is because Poser materials often convert to Carrara better than Studio ones. But where a Carrara native version is available, that isn't an issue.
Nowadays though, more and more Studio scenes use Instances (a kind of proto-replicator), and that isn't supported by Poser, hence no Poser version (mind you, Carrara doesn't handle DS Instances either).
Really happy to see this coming for DS :)
Yup, me too :)
It looks like Rothenburg ob der Tauber. If any of you ever make it to Germany, go there, it's amaizing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothenburg_ob_der_Tauber
Howie,
I'm delighted to see this is coming to DAZ Studio. My favourite warrioress will look awesome slaughtering her oponents in its streets.
Cheers,
Alex.
That's precicely the town that I was using for inspiration. :)
YES!!!
*sigh* Now if only Studio versions of some of your older landscape serieses were on the To Do list.
Looking forward to this for sure. I have most of your other things, even though I don't really use Cararra, just because they were that good.
That's beautiful work Howie, I love it!
Sadly most of them are not suitable for conversion to Studio. But some do, and I'm looking mainly at the Japanese garden one as a possibility - either as a direct copy or maybe an all new version 2.
Okay, you've grabbed me by the scruff of my curiosity. What does the complete scene look like? And will it be customisable at all with separate or moveable buildings?
It's as exact a copy of the Carrara version as I can make so you can look at the promos for it to get an idea of the extent of the scene.

Each building is a separate prop, as well as a lot of the details such as the tables, seats, flowers, trees, planters, lamps etc. There are 8 different buildings each with 2 different frontages and a few available colour schemes.
@ HowieFarkes: Is it also possible for you to recreate some of your environment scenes for carrara for DAZStudio as well? I'd really like to see scenes as "Secret Lake" or "country Lane" rendered in DS' IRay.
The intention is certainly to convert some of my previous products to Studio, but which ones are possible is at the moment a little limited (not sure yet how to create/convert 100,000s+ instances). The Japanese garden is a possiblity.
Here's another view of the scene rendered in 3Delight. Pretty close to completed for upload.
Your Japanese garden the structures export over fine it is the plants that are the issue.
Carrara plants are dreadfully high poly.
I have used the bones of the set in iClone which loads less than DAZ studio can by substituting plants mostly as billboards and suspect that may need to be the case, modelled mesh with transmap single poly plane leaves for trees and shrubs, billboard duckweed, lillies etc.
The fallen leaves may need to be part of the terrain texture too with displacement, one thing DAZ studio does do well is displacement it has to include subdivision in the iray shader too.
for Octane render in Carrara I reduced the Carrara trees and shrubs radically and got it in but they are very straggly they still used your replicators, if only there was an easy way to use DS instances like Carrara replicators.
I found I had to drastically poly-reduce trees, otherwise you'd end up in the millions per tree. Oversizing the leaves can help prevent it looking too scraggy, at the risk of becoming cartoonish if you overdo it. I tried transmapped single poly leaves, but that borked the render times into 10s of hours! The trees I have in the store and my thread here are in the order of 2 - 300,000 polys each. They can be instanced in DS pretty quickly, but drag the UI down pretty quickly too, since there are no bounding box/crosses etc. display options. other plants too might need to be poly-reduced. In Carrara I replicated smaller patches which could be exported and instanced. You need to find a balance between the size of the patch and the number of instances. Also, create several patches for variety.
Just noticed there's a new product in the store today, which might help - http://www.daz3d.com/instances-plus-for-daz-studio Looks like it has some interesting options - bounding boxes & drop to terrain in particular. Haven't tried it, but I'm already wondering where was it a few weeks ago!
That plug-in looks quite interesting - will need to investigate.
The trees in my scene I got down to 260,000 polys and that was probably about as low as I could go before they started to look too "simple".
yes indeed that plugin by Draagonstorm has turned up just in time
I wish you well in your endeavours to recreate your scenes in DAZ studio but still am glad you wooed me to Carrara with them as you have many
Greetings,
Just to note, I'm another that pretty much owns Carrara just to load your scenes into it; I've never managed to actually interact with it for more than half an hour at a time without giving up in agonized frustration, or even load and pose a single character, but the few renders of different areas of your products I've managed to do are breathtaking.
I've always dreamed of DAZ Genesis-based characters having a picnic on the edge of the Secret Lake, or next to the creek in Country Lane 2, but it's never worked out. While I'm excited to see Harpsburg, it's your pastorals that I really would love to see. Just to note, instancing does work in DAZ Studio; I recall it was limited at first, but it's evidently gotten better.
I know conversions probably won't happen, because (1) D|S probably isn't up to the challenge yet, and (2) who wants to spend too much time revisiting their old work? But if you do consider a new pastoral or country scene, I'd love it if you'd consider DAZ Studio.

Harpsburg (or Rotheburg o.d.T) for DAZ Studio. That's great news. Love the details you've created in your products. Hopefully yoo will do some more DAZ-convertings from your great Carrara product (I would love to have the Byodo In, because I love asian buildings).
Greetings,
It's funny you would mention that! It's one of the ones that actually exists in both Carrara and DAZ form: Check out Byōdō-in by Merlin.

looks great, hopefully it will have a 3delight option I do not use Iray
...and hopefully it is possible to hide or remove items like plants or chairs or other props or the option to move them around.
You know, I'm totally new to DAZ, but ... OMG - that Harpsburg looks terrific!
It's a work of art in its own right, isn't it?
Cheers,
Alex.
