Swapping a CR2 file for another in an existing Carrara file. Any clues?

Hya, I have about 100 images and car files (for a wordless book) featuring the plain vanilla Daz Pup.

I need to change the plain vanilla Daz pup into a pup that's more interesting.

Because Daz Pup doesnt come with as many morphs as the Mil Dog I have injected Daz Pup with Mil Dog's morphs in an external program.

I've saved out this new cr2 file (with 'use external binary morphs' set to on) and swapped the exisiting Daz Pup Cr2 with this new Cr2 - so when I load daz pup into a new scene in Carrara I get the new super dooper Daz Pup instead of the old plain vanilla one.

But when I load up my old original carrrara files that I have rendered the images for the book with, I get the original plain vanilla daz pup again.

I have inagoni's SWAP that will swap one figure with another but

I need to have the Daz Pup stay where he is in the same pose as the existing images, just with a new different head morph etc.

thanks for ideas!!

  • As far as I remember, from when I used to use Poser quite a lot for transferring stuff to Carrara, you shouldn't use external binary morphs. Carrara does not recognise a Cr2's external morphs. My suggestion is save the CR2 with 'use external binary morphs' set to off.

Yeah, even saving 'locally' the actual geometry is written into each .car file, so you'll have to replace the CR2 yourself, I'm afraid.

Same with Genesis. Save a .car with Genesis in it, but then buy more shapes and stuff... the new stuff won't populate in the previous .car saves until you load in a fresh DUF.

    That's what I thought...but I held off comment.

If you want the same pose save that as a NLA clip from the original

Right. That can even transfer the shape settings too. I use Pose instead of Clip. You already know how to sve the Master Shader. Then just save the NLA pose file, open the new model and "Load Clip Data" from the NLA tab of that new figure.

thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

as a test I opened up a sample car file with a text editor and it looks like you could do it that way as the morphs are listed - that's if you know what you are doing, (which I dont .;) )

I didn't know that about the NLA clips for shape settings.

I have Fenric's pose transfer thing but I never seem to press the right selection to get it do what I want to do

My problem is that if I bring the new dog in I have to scale it, centre it,, transfer the pose. Not a problem for 10 or eleven scenes, just a bit daunting for a 100...... :(

Once again, thanks for everyone's input!

Oh I think it might be easiest to render the scenes again without the dog, then composit him in. Might work....

Yeah... I feel bad for ya... it's always best to save the new file under a different name - even just slightly different. That way you still have the original to work with.

Yes. You could even save the lighting from the scenes to your browser, use those on your dog with the scene render in the backdrop. Alternatively you could render the dog with alpha and use that as a brush in Howler.

Nice idea about the brush, thanks Dart :)

Why can' t you save the new dog to your browser in a 0,0,0 position then drag and drop it to the other dog in the scene tag the apply the NLA pose to it?

you then drag it to the left to unparent and delete the first dog

I swap out Howies trees that way for Octane
