Magnifying glass effect in Iray

Been playing with settings  all last night till around 5 am and my eyes burn already..lol

Does someone here know how to setup a "correct" realistic magnifying glass shader in Iray with out using the presets? (cant use pre....anything)

thank you :)

I would have thought that the shape and IOR would have to be the same as a real one. So it may have to come down in making a glass lens shaped in real world units and as far as I know it's more to do with the lens shape than IOR,

Yes, a modeled, to real world scale and specs, lens is the first thing you need.

What do you mean you can''t "use pre anything"?

Remember that at some point you're going to need to apply at least the Daz Uber Iray shader preset, which sets the proper nodes for an Iray-compatible render. That's the minimum preset that you must make. From there, you might apply a glass preset and change to suit, or otherwise you'll be messing around with a lot of bewildering settings in order to get the proper type of glass.

In any case, one of the Iray options is Thin Walled. If you are using a geometry shaped like a magnifying glass, you will want this option set to Off. Combined with a physically correct glass geometry this setting will get you  a result closer to what you are looking for.

  • Thanks

That was done already I actually already created that and did what im trying to do inside of Daz in another program but it maybe cause im just very tired I dont see the IOR setting once i apply the Iray Uber Base.. need to sleep I'll look it over again when i get up..lol

    thabk you.

  • The Reason i said no Pre set anythings  is because im not sure on what can or cant be included in an item which will go to market so to play it safe i try not to include any pre....anything.

I'm sure creating it all from scratch will be a PITA..but the only way i figure i will learn it is by doing it myself.

    Anyway thank you very much.

I still don't understand...the shader/material presets are just configuration files.  Without the actual shaders, which are included in Studio, they are worthless.  Very little that is sold in the store here, at Rendo, RDNA, Hivewire or anywhere else has made from scratch, no preset anything.  If that were the case there would be vastly less content available as most vendors either don't have the time or the skill set to create the needed shaders from scratch.

Yes to ^^^^^. Presets just contain "pointers" to the files that do the actual work. You are free to distribute a model where you've used default Daz Iray shaders, as is or further modified by you. When saved, the model will contain your material settings and changes.

So far I've not seen any products that use wholly custom Iray shaders. A few of us here have shared snippets of code on how to do this, but it's not a common practice among vendor products. All the "glass" products I've seen are based on the various Daz Iray Uber presets, often tweaked for a particular look.

This quick render is of a freebie magnifying glass at ShareCG, and uses only the Iray presets. The glass is solid -clear (Thin Wall: off). Only the IOR was changed, to 1.2, because the default gives a magnifying effect that is too strong. This is because the geometry of the glass is shaped like a lens. Iray takes that into account.

Ok wasnt too sure on that since i normally dont finish my final items in studio (I've only used it to group/rig/weightmap ) so this will be my 1st 100% all studio stuff so just wanted to make sure.
The part/parts which need the shader is goggles i did for my new little toon guy.

trying to magnify it too the point of filling in that whole lens (well almost.) with the eye

The render image isnt from iray was testing it elsewhere too see where im going with it on the glass

    anyway thank you agian
