File icon missing for Carrara 8.5 Pro project files + DIM re-loaded SOLVED

OK, I am still building my network with my new power-machine. And, yay.... I can access my Carrara content files on drive c (in programme folder) of original machine from new machine (had to 'take control' of C drive), and I also have duplicated My DAZ 3D Library on the external drive which is accessible from both machines. All is well so far for accessing and using the content! Am working on categorizing some of the Poser content, and other stuff acquired outside of DAZ/DIM. But that's a rainy-day chore. My bigger problems are:

1   On my new machine, I have Carrara installed and the icon for the programme is there. But for any files I create and save on THAT machine or for any new or old ones that I view via the network on the external drive, show a generic icon.  (see attached) I know in Adobe you can fix this by refreshing the .bat file in their Shell file.  I don't know what to do here.  Any ideas? The files open just fine.

2   I stupidly installed DIM on the new machine. I didn't think... should just have left it on the old machine. So I unstalled DIM on new machine, but it opened Pandora's DIM box.

Now I have a thousand or so files waiting to be downloaded on the old machine! I don't want to do that. Other than making them all hidden for-ever, is there a way to make that go away? I don't need them again. I did go ahead and changed the path in DIM on old machine to go to the new content location for DAZ/Poser content on the external drive. Maybe that's what caused it and not my putting DIM on the new machine?

I left the Carrara path the same as I can get there from the new machine via the network.

All this reorganising is painful, but necessary. Any help appreciated.

Good to hear things are progressing.

When I built the new machine I had the same issue with DIM I found out somewhere on the forum in the commons that all you need to do is copy the Manifest file for DIM as it is what tells it what has been downoaded.

I will confirm the file name when I get home to night.

CM, You're a star!  That is the worst of the two issues. Cheers, yesheart SileneUK

Not having DIM on your new machine, IMHO, is just plain silly. Why not have clean and fresh versions of everything without headaches? Look at the headaches you've already made for yourself?

I have no clue about your desktop icon issues. Are you saying that, when you've previously saved .CAR files to your desktop they shown the Carrara Icon? I imagine you could go into the properties of the file and change its icon. That seems (to me) more like an operating system issue than anythung to do with Carrara. If it's not showing the icon you've shown above, in place of something more generic, try right-clicking on the file and use "Open With..." and make sure to check the "Always use this app for thise type of file" and then OK.

    Hi Dart,

    Thanks for replying.

When I did originally put it on the new machine, it was going to have to download some 1500 DAZ content files. I still would have had to move over all the other content acquired elsewhere. Plus, in some of the DAZ content files, I have added textures to the original files (with their own unique names of course). So I did not want to over-write those.

I don't need DIM on the new machine because theMy  DAZ 3D Library is now on the external drive which I can reach from both machines. So I guess DIM could be on either machine. Don't think having it on both will work very well.  And I have Carrara, DS and Poser still on the old machine, and will for a while, until I can clear out old stuff and reorganise. I was thinking of later having the old machine be a render node once I got more educated and organised.

I am amazed at the speed of the new one. I can open a 2GB Carrara file in a couple of minutes, well maybe 3. But on my old machine it just hangs and hangs. I am so glad I got it. It's been worth the glitches.

Yes, it's a system thingy about the icon, but I cannot seem to re-associated these files with Carrara. It says they ARE associated with it, but just get plain icons. Hmmmm. Not a biggie, just wondering. Small potatoes, though, in the scheme of things.

ETA:  If you meant Carrara Native Content... that's all properly downloaded. There is some Carrara content that I bought that I am sharing via the C drive on the old machine.

Here is a link to a similar question. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/68929/getting-new-pc#latest

here is the path to the folder in windows.

Oh... I see. Once in a while, my DIM gets confused and lists that I have 'everything' to download from my account. Just give it some time (leaving it open) and it will rectify itself. The one burden of a squeeky new power tower is the fact that it doesn't come with all of our stuff! LOL Before long all of this will smooth itself out.

    Hi Siline :)

Even though DIM says you have ton's of stuff "available to download" it doesn't get too upset if you don't download everything, and just download what you "Need" to use regularly,. rather than having hundreds of files lying around using up drive space and rarely being used.

I got a new drive recently and decided to install clean from scratch, and not to transfer all my old junk onto my new drive, ..the old drive is still there and i can access thiose files if I need to, but it's surprising how much content we accumulate and rarely use, including Carrara Native Content,. which comes as "starter" content, and is great for learning ,..but isn't actually needed by carrara, once you know how to create scenes, shaders etc,.

If you have Carrara specific products on another drive,. you may have some issues IF they contain plants/leaves,. as the plant and leaf files need to be installed into Carrara's program folders.

It may be worth using DIM to Download and install those into your new Carrara,.. IF you have any issues with those.

Edit: Your icons are the same as the ones I have,. I don't think they're Windows generic icons,. otherwise they wouldn't have a little Carrara "C" in the corner

So funny! I never realized that my .car files had those icons before this came up here! LOL

Sure enough, I have them too!

Goodness... how odd. On my older machine I got the fancy icon which is same as the app icon. On new machine, it's as Andy said. OK, it's not meeeeee....yipppeeeee!

OK, I am doing a "Dart".  angel I uninstalled Carrara AND DS4.5 from the old machine.  Am loading them up on the new one (but DS 4.8 this time). Odd, it says you can use DIM to download both Carrara Pro 8.5 and DS 4.8, but it does not want to happen. So am doing those two manually.  I did a "Dart" because I realised I wanted to have DS4.8 now and that means going PostGre. I want this so I can have Genesis 3 products work properly or at least via the DS workaround as I hope they will offer more possibilities, and fingers crossed when Carrara ups to another build.

Also moved all my old Carrara "content" files that are were in its programme folder on C drive of old machine to the external drive. I also moved all My DAZ 3D Library bits over there, too (had already actually done that).  Now these files will be available to either access from or move over to their proper folders on the new machine. Need to properly organise the Carrara browser tabs. Yes, Andy, I understand about LEAVES, and I also will selectively move objects over. I know I will have issues with texture paths, but can clean up as I access any custom browser items. There's scads I will never use. And I have many items saved to browser that I want to be sure and get on there.  I will  continue to save project files for Carrara and DS on the external drive. I cannot believe how many projects I have. Many are just beginner experiments, so will have a clean out.

Bottom line... no point keeping Carrara and DS4.5 with its Valentina on the old machine as the faster renders are next door on the new one. I have lots of side programmes, eg Howler, Terragen, and other things like that on the old machine, so I am going to keep both machines networked.

Only 1500 items to re-download... what else to do on a sunny winter's day. frown Sod's law I'd decide to do this when the dog is begging me for a long walk! cheeky

Back later... there will be questions that will come up.

    Cheers!  yes  SIleneUK

HELP please.... I cannot seem to get DIM to work after installing. Once I get the account screen... and choose something to download, it just disappears. I have uninstalled it and restarted my machine a dozen time.  I have tried downloading it from a few different link/buttons on the DAZ site, but all the same. I remove the downloaded exe files and start fresh each time.  Oddly as well, it's now displaying SileneUK then my email in parenthesis under account name, it's just showing my email. But all the products come up. But nothing downloads... it just disappears.  I did download DS 4.8 and Carrara Pro 8.5 manually. Then I thought the DIM would work as I set up the correct/preferred paths.

I think I remember once before that DIM had some buggy moments... is today one of them?

Bummed out here.... am I doing something wrong?

    OK tenth time lucky....whew!

I'm not sure why that's happening,. .. server maintainance ?

Are the paths to your applications setup correctly inside DIM

Manually installing  applications means that DIM is unaware of that,. unless you specify an application path, and even then DIM can't uninstall those apps, since it didn't install them

My advice is to download and install all your products, (including DS and Carrara) in DIM,. once you get it working :)

then it knows what's installed and where, and can instal any product updates.

I'm OK now Andy, thanks to FixMyPcMike.  I had downloaded the DIM to a protected part of the C drive for some stupid reason. So it was not working properly and after it closed once, I could not get it to run. No permissions per the log.  I had to change the path in the App Roaming file thingy, restart, then wah-lah, it ran.  I didn't want to unload and then reload Car and DS again, so just left them as is.

Carrara is looking great now. I have left off a lot of the native content, like the plastic airplanes, etc. Just moved them into a file not in the browser tab files.  But still have many many files to go and am reviewing and choosing.

Thanks for asking! This is definitely a process and not an event. laugh SileneUK

...but those cool little native content thingies take up no space and are so fun down the road when you want to try something different! ;)

Pulled a Dart, did ya? I'm sorry, my friend! I didn't mean to rub off on ya... angel

There are native content items I like... so they are in the browser. The ones that just clutter my eyeballs up are over in a file marked NOT IN BROWSER for that group. So they are there if I want something... just drag and drop into the right browser file. Their names are descriptive enough to know what the items are.

Getting more organised and am going with what makes finding things and making use of good stuff easier. I have to say some Carrara products load awkwardly... your Badland and Woodlands are always visible and where I expect them to be!

I love this new machine and am so grateful to Chohole for recommending PC Specialist (here in the UK). Good price, and elsewhere I bought one of those lighted gaming keyboards which is great when working over here in my dark corner. They were hard to find with the UK keyboard layout, and they are now all wired. My old Logitech one was wireless, but didn't last long.  Also found a mouse that is almost a clone of the one for my other machine. Trackball mice are great for helping with hand cramp and carpal tunnel type things. Finding a  big one that fills your hand which you can keep spread out and not in a graspy cramp producing position... meant I had to go wired, but that's fine. Only mentioning these in case someone else is looking for same. PM me and will give you the details.
