Hello - I am new to hdri images - just gon through the DAZ masterclass on youtube dealing with it. I downloaded Dresden Station Night from Poly Haven - I created an envriomental node, with infinite sphere with ground and put the image in. It looked perfectly fine in filiment, but when I rendered it in Iray this is the result.... Is there a step I am missing? Thank you in advance for any help that you can give. :)

The trick with HDRIs is that they're fundamentally 2-dimensional, so they only look completely correct at world zero. Adding a ground plane changes what DS thinks world zero is, causing those distortions you see. I just popped that HDRI into DS myself, and found that I had to change ground position to manual and raise ground origin Y to about 224, and then it looked normal again.
edit: on further investigation, the HDRI looked normal, but that puts the ground plane way too high, so that's not really a workable solution. It's only the ground plane that introduces those distortions, so there might be some additional tips about using an HDRI with a ground plane so that you can compensate more easily.
Thank you - I will start from scratch and try a new hdri image :)
This one is better ! I think the problem was including the ground plain, plus the order I was doing things. This time I put the background on first, moved the 'camera' a small degree to where I wanted the man, and then added him and everything seemed to work!.
It might be worth getting Catcher Plus or Iray HDRI Toolkit, because I could only get those distortions to occur when the ground plane was enabled, and either of those kits would let you get ground shadows without the actual ground.
THanks for the tips - I purchased the resources - now wI have to learn how to use them :) One step at a time :)
For scenes that show a characters feet I recommend using HDRI's only for skies and distant scenery. Ground and close scenery should be actual geometry.
Why? I used Dresden Station HDR in this old render. I also have others using HDR's.
Gordig,
Do you have experience and/or success with using Catcher Plus to produce shadows on 2D images? I started a thread asking for help on this yesterday. https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/694576/catcher-plus-3d-universe#latest
Thanks.
I don't actually own either product, don't use HDRIs in the way the OP is trying to, and no longer render in DS.
Let me quote yourself back at you, from this old thread about this very subject:
tldr: too much hassle.
Three years ago. Hopefully I have moved on a bit since then :) Fair enough though If you can't spend the time to get them to work. I am retired so have all day most days to jump in and out of Daz Studio, not everyone has that luxury :)
The Matte Function in DAZ Studio is what I use when needed.
