Changing visibility of object and all it's children easily?

Is there a way to make an object and all of its children invisible without having to go through and click the "eye" for each every child? I've tried selecting the object and all its children and then checking the "eye" of the object, but it has no effect on the children that are also selected.
You would think that somewhere (hopefully) there would be a way to do this. Any thoughts?

Hold down cmd(Mac)/ctrl(Win) and click the eye icon in the Scene pane - but note that if you already have some of the childen hidden and unhide the hierarchy using the same shortcut then they will also be restored to visibility.
In the scene tab(or viewport) select all objects to be hidden, then, in the paramters tab, Under the Display path, cllick Visible in Scene to off
Those both work great! Thank you so much! It's especially helpful when running a dForce sim inside a complicated scene.
You can also use a Group, which can be hidden without affecting the visibility settings of its members (which apply only when the group itself is visible).
