Iray render taking a lot longer than usual

So render times for me are usually pretty good. I render my images at 1290px by 1040px and after a few hours they come back looking pretty awesome. I use a simple paper roll (grey) background and have my character as the main subject and I use mesh lighting. I have recently gone to render another image using all the same settings, the only difference being that the subject takes up more of the image, the background is a very light grey (almost white) and I've added a sweat shine to the characters skin. With those differences this render has been running for 5 hours and is still at 0%. Could any of these factors contribute to increasing the rendering time?

Which version of Studio 4.8 or 4.9?
Boy that is a big topic. I have read a fair amount about Iray, but my understanding is imperfect. So take this for what it is worth. Translucency adds a lot of calculation to Iray. The sweat shine you mention could be just that. If you have the time, trying taking the sweat off and see if that helps. Also DS 4.9 seems to be more stable and likely faster than 4.8.
Could be caused by several of the changes you made. For example, a closer framing of a human subject may involve greater bump and displacement detail, both of which will take longer to render. When analyzing performance, make one change at a time. That will help you better pinpoint the cause(s).
Recently 4.9
Thanks all. So I tried taking the sweat shine off last night and it was still taking just as long. The only other thing I can think of is that I've set the amount of pixels slightly higher, like 1700x1200 or something. And that most of the frame is taken up by the character. But all in all I wouldn't consider these massive changes to my other renders which is what is baffling me.
Like I noted, rendering can take a lot longer in closeups. This is because there is much more detail to render, not just with the base texture, but also from bump, normal, displacement, and transparency maps.. I have some full body scenes that take 2 minutes to render; head-and-shoulder closeups can easily take an hour. Zoomed in, skin and hair show far more detail, and detail requires more time.
I sturggle to understand basic lighting so I'm not a good resource but a few things I have noticed. If I've been working in Daz for a while, "things happen." Images will be blurry. Renders will be 100% black or grey. Changes don't take effect. If I quit the application and go back in then it will work OK.
Sometimes a render will just stop. You leave the computer to run overnight but there is no progress when you check in the morning. I do know that can be a function of the product. I got fed up with one product doing that and requested a refund.
When I am doing a long render I will exit other applications, such as Photoshop and my browser, and just stay off the computer. It probably wouldn't hurt to add more RAM. There may be conflicts, I have monitor calibration software running in the background and who knows what else. The anti-virus software is always lurking in memory. There are too many software packages now that always have to check in with the mother ship which means "stuff" is going on over the internet even though you're not using the application.
So it can be a variety of factors. Daz itself is not bug free. Some of the products are lacking in quality. And who knows what other applications are doing for interrupting CPU functions.
I think I'm going to just set it to keep rendering until it looks done. Hope it doesn't take like 50 hours. I am running a 2010 MacBook Pro but it hasn't got bad hardware. One thing I noticed is that unlike my other renders, this one is only doing about 70 iterations an hour. That strikes me as a bit slow D:
Also would having a lighter coloured background effect iray speeds? Having to deal with more light etc?
