Changes to Surfaces tab?

vonHobovonHobo Posts: 1,689

With DAZ Studio 4.23, I have noticed that the Opacity parameters are missing in the Surfaces tab.

I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong, but they don't seem to be there anymore.

I used to use these parameters to adust opacity to zero when using anatomical with geoshells, to stop the white color on the anatomy.

Is there a way around this? Can I use a different method?

geoshell visibility can be altered under Parameters tab by facegroup.

Opacity will appear as an option on a per shader basis. Not all shaders have opacity.

Yes, this is nothing to do with the pane but with the shader applied (which you can see at top-left of the Editor tab). PBRSkin, for example, lacks the Cutout Opacity setting by design.

I tried this and it worked...

Select the Geoshell > Visibility > Surfaces in Parameters tab.

    Turn "Off" the desired selection(s).

    Thanks!

If you'd like Cutout Opacity on the PBRSkin shader, check out Josh and I's PBRSkin Plus shader in the store: https://www.daz3d.com/pbr-skin-plus

I will check it out. Thank you!

How do I make G9 figure partially visible? 50%? 25%? etc. I can turns parts on and off. But I want the figure to be 66% transparent. Like the alpha channel is set to 0.333 in a paint program. Most every other object in Daz has a Cutout Opacity slider or an Opacity Strength slider. But the base G9 figure does not any Opacity sliders at all. Eyelashes, Eyes, and Tears have Cutout Opacity. But Nails, Skin, Mouth, etc. do not have opacity settings.

G9 characters normally use PBR skin as shader, and that doesn't have cutout oppacity, basically because if you use cutout oppacity subsurface won't work.

You could use something like https://www.daz3d.com/pbr-skin-plus

And I even have that. Forgot I had it.

Trying it out... it doesn't work when applied to a Genesis 9 Mouth or Eyes Left or Eyes Right. But does work on EyeMoisture Left and Right. Weird. But all the other G9 parts now have Cutout Opacity. I guess I can't open the figure's mouth... Hmm.

It does not seem to work on Genesis 9 Eyes or Genesis 9 Mouth assets. The rest of a G9 figure can have cutout opacity added to it. Not these: Genesis 9 Eyes/Eyes Left, Genesis 9 Eyes/Eyes Right, Genesis 9 Mouth/Mouth, Genesis 9 Mouth/Teeth. Even though it say they are PBRSkin (MDL) shaders.

did you read this thread and the post youre replying to?
Your screenshot  shows you are using PBRSkin and not the PBRSkin Plus that is referenced in the post you replied to.

It is news to me that I'm not using PBRSkin Plus.

A shader can be applied to any geometry. It would make no sense that you can apply it to some geometry and not other geometry. I responded to your other post in the other thread about this.

Did you actually click and apply that while selecting the relevant surface in question.

And yet it doesn't work. It looks like the script exits prematurely when applying to the eyes and mouth.

  • lilweeplilweep Posts: 2,531

If that's really true that you can apply the shader to some geometry and not other geometry, then you can go into shader editor or shader mixer tab (whatever it is called), and load a shader (load from scene) while selecting a surface with the desired shader.  This will bring the shader into shader mixer and you can then select another surface in your scene and in shader mixer click the Apply button.

There's no error in the log.

And yes I did apply the script to the eyes and mouth. What a question.

What other shader to use in the mixer? Is there a clear shader? Since I don't want to change the shader for the eyes or mouth. And if I have to do it myself in the baker, why did I buy the product?

More fooling around. Selecting Eyes doesn't work. But doing each eye, left and right separate does work. But selecting the G9 figure, it applies the opacity setting to everything in the surfaces tab of the figure that isn't a separate asset. Weird.

I was explaining another method for copying/pasting surfaces: step 1. load into shader mixer. step 2: apply it to another surface.

Not sure what you are referring to with all that stuff in your comment.

you seem to be struggling to apply a shader preset to a surface, I was trying to confirm that you are selecting the surface(s) in the Surfaces tabbefore applying it (which you have yet to confirm by the way)
