  • I haven't used DAZ for quite a few years, the Reality plug-in was still a new thing last time I did a render. Hope that doesn't exclude me from the contest.

After going through lots of tutes and videos on YouTube this is my first outing with Iray.

Oooooohh... I like that color subtlety coming in.  One question, is she supposed to be looking at her subject?  Her head is thrown so far back it appears she is focusing on the ceiling.

I agree...that sublte pop of colour really works.

Okay this is a rough draft.  3Delight - Uber environment with sky 8.  I darkened the Uber environment lights quite a bit to make it nightime using darker grey and blue greys.  I have point lights on the top of the staff and along the lightning bolt.  It needs..... something more.  Or less lol. Not sure where to go with this, I would kind of like to make the circle glow a bit more but have no idea how to make that happen. I feel like the edges need to be darker.

Sonja, as I happened  to struggle with a similar problem and just found a very nice solution i will give you the link to the 3delight laboratory thread place where the problem is adressed. Its not trivial but once understood its a lot of fun: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/1011047/#Comment_1011047, starts with the top entry, more info in the following. I will post my WIP where I put it in use ASAP

Thank you! I will go have a look shortly.  Not at my laptop right now but am going to read the relevent bits now and then read again when I am actually working on it.  Might actually stick then lol.  And that looks like exactly what I need.

I like the lighting you have for your figure but I would suggest a less busy background.  Right now it is drawing more of my attention than your figure.

Here's my full render, thanks for the feedback to improve it.  Took a while to get it done it kept stopping around 30% done.  Didn't realize when I upgraded to 4.9 it by default stops rendering in IRay after 2 hours.  Once that was pointed out it rendered fine. :-)

Infiltrator - Rendered in DAZ 4.9, in IRay

Lighting:  Key Spotlight on David main character, 5 Emissive IRay Lanterns. Going for a gaslight look.

    This is a big improvement.

The foreground is getting too much light.  The specular on the pipes to the right of the scene is distracting, and the direct light falling on the pipes to the left as well.  I think you have some light bleed from your environment which is causing the specular on the right.

The robot is better, but he needs a backlight... it will help him stand out and if you angle it right, might add a sinister air.

When using Uber Area Lights, is there a way to duplicate a light without creating a new one and manually adjusting all the settings?

For example, I am working on a scene in a room that has 8 wall sconces.  I have been following Szark's tutorial, and had to go through quite a few steps to get everything set just for 1 light.  I would like to copy that Uber Area Light, or perhaps its settings, and paste them to the other 7 lights without going through the tedious process of manually setting everything up for each one.

Anyone know if this is possible?

    Thanks!

Are you referring to the light settings or the location or both?

You can copy/paste the light settings from the first UE2 light to any additional lights you add but you would need to place the lights manually.

Anyway, about the lights...how do you copy the settings from one UE2 light to another?  Can it be done all at once, or do we have to do it 1 at a time?

Oh, and btw, I was asking about the Uber AREA light settings, not the UberEnvironment2 lights.

    Thanks Kismet

There is no way to copy the location/rotation settings.  If anyone knows how I would love to hear it.

As for the other settings first load your lights and once you have the settings the way you want on the first light go into the Surfaces Tab; highlight the light; right click and choose "Copy Selected Surface(s)" - Image 2

Then select the light you want to change; go into the Surfaces Tab; highlight and right click;  Choose "Paste to Selected Surface(s)" - Image 3

Repeat the pasting process until all lights have the same settings

Editted to Add:  Yes you can do all the lights at once.  You just highlight them all and then follow the above steps.

I think this looks good but....The background is a bit busy can hardly make out what she is carrying in her hand the lighting is pretty good too in my opinion I would change the background to make her pop out.

I just figured out how to copy and paste any or all of the transform settings from one object to another.

Select the object you want to copy, then in the Parameters tab, open General setting.  You should see Transforms in there.  Open that and you will see Translation, Rotation and Scale for that object.  Each of those settings has a little G in front of it (probably stands for Group).

Click on the transform that you want to copy, say, Translation.  Press CTRL C...on a PC.  (Command C on a Mac)  This will copy X, Y and Z transforms to the clipboard.

Now click on the object you want to copy these transforms to.  Click on the exact same place in the parameters tab of the 2nd object.  Open General > Transforms > translation.  Press Ctrl V  (command V).  All of the translation data from object 1 will copy to the object 2 andthe object will move to the new position.

You can do this for Rotation and Sacle too.

If you want to copy all of the transform data (translation, rotation and scale) at the same time, Open General, and highlight Transforms then press Ctrl C (Cmd C). (see attached Image)

Now paste this data to the 2nd object.  Make sure you have Transforms highlighted on the 2nd object.

Let me know if this is unclear, and I will try to do a better job.  I threw this together right before bed time....sorry.

Have to work on the textures for the clothes.

    HI Mick

I know this competition is about lighting but i have to say,. Nice modelling and texturing too. :)

On the lamps and lighting,. there's a couple of thing in Carrara which can help  ,.

the "aura" effect can add a visible glow around objects which have a Glow channel value, or colour,. ,.

Enabling "Indirect lighting" in the render settings,. can also help indoor scenes,

you can also enable Light through transparency in the render settings,. then add a little bit of transparency to the Lamp shades,. that will also add a little more light to the room since some of the light will pass through.

    Hope it helps; :)

At the very top of the page on the right side is a little white star.  Click on this star and it will change colour - see attached image.

I like your new background.  It provides some interest but not so much that is it distracting.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of your changes.

Thank you 3dAge, there are a total of nine lights in this scene, a bulb each in the lights set to 40 with soft shadows enabled, one to light the main picture on the back wall and the rest are streetlights outside. Indirect lighting is enabled and set to an intensity of 200. I havnt used any filters in the scene as I wanted to use the lights themselves for the scene without fancy tricks. The lamps bases were made using simple primitives and the bulge modifier. Our lampshade at home is black and doesnt light bleed, I just tried to recreate my home as close as I could.

    Thank you Kismet.

I have done a mini-tute that might help some Iray users. Since Iray works like real world light and bounces around, using a surface to reflect light back into a scene might be a better option than adding another light.

Reflected light has a softer feel about it and is great for softening shadows. I am no expert on this and have just started experimenting. Hope you find it usefull.

Great point. Can be tricky, however, in practice to get this to work the way you want. While you can add a light that is as soft as you want...making it bigger and increasing the spread angle will lead to a much softer, more diffuse light with gentler shadows and highlights.

  • Here's my first go at this month's contest.  I want to make her look more like she's on a nightclub stage.  Right now she's a little washed out.  Suggestions?

Might be a good idea, Knittingmommy.  Hadn't thought of that.  I guess I could delete everything out of the scene except the light I want to duplicate, then save it as a preset or maybe even a scene file.  Then I could load it or merge it for repeated instances.

    Have to look into that...

    Thx!

    Which program are you using?

The first thing I noticed is slight pokethrough around her left shoulder/armpit.  Her pose looks quite good otherwise.
