Iray multi pass rendering

Hi everybody.

I would like to try some sort of multi pass animation render with iray.

The main goal is to render the background and the characters separately and then put all together with, to say, Backburner.

Is it possible to render the character on some sort of “white floor” and then keep just the character and its shadow (and maybe its reflection) turning the “floor” into an alpha channel?

Any advice?

  • If you render to an image sequence, using PNG (or tiff) the alha channel will be preserved.

  • Hi, thanks for the answer.smiley

Yes, I knew that. What I meant, is how to keep the floor in the alpha channel while keeping the shadows casting on it in the RGB one…

In other words, I am looking for a way to have a “floor” object that does not render except in the spots in which the shadows are casted, so I can layer a character and its shadow over a background faking its shadow projecting on the floor.

given that Iary is a physically correct render engine I don't think this is possible. But I could be wrong.

You can can keep shadows, highlights and indirect colours on an transparent background with a Matte shader:

  • Thanks! It's exacly what I'm looking for. smiley

Following your hint I found a couple of other posts on the forum.

Are around the net some more more in depth (and noob oriented...) walkthough on the matter?

Thanks again to everybody for the answers!
