backdrop? background?

my only experience with 3d stuff was with Poser, which i knew from using it years ago, and now realize it does not have ability to meet my needs. but it has a feature called backgrouns that was useful: i oould project a scene onto the b'ground and then pose figures in front of it. Daz seems to have a similar feature, now called Environments but i don't understand how to use it, and the Guide hasn't helped me. can some helpful person here tell me approx. how to use it and what it does?

Open the Environment Pane by selecting [Window] - [Panes(Tabs)] - [Environment] from the menu bar.

Select "Backdrop" from the [Type:] dropdown list.

Click the triangle on the left edge of [Background], select "Browse...", and then select the image file you want to use as the backdrop.

If [Visible in Render] is On, the background image will also be displayed in the rendering result.

When you place characters or props in the Scene, the Environment settings may be initialized, so in that case, please select Backdrop again.
