Boom, crash, daz 32 bit can't render

I put in a support ticket, but (no offense) being as support hasn't been that helpful for me in the past (though they tried) I thought I'd fish in here, too.

Just testing becaus the upgrade has forced me to reset my library. A simple toon scene. Star, clothes, hair, etc. Maybe, clothes, hair, etc. Simple backdrop plane. Visual style shaders. I tell 32 bit to render 600 pixels wide to new window and it crashes.

However, 64bit handles it just fine.

I have no idea even where to begin to troubleshoot. I'm very concerned because I'm preparing to do a toon venture, and mimic and lipsync don't work on the 64 bit model. Real concerned.

Any input would be valuable. Unless it's for me to do the dishes, because we hates it.

See what the RAM usage is when rendering with 64-bit, it sounds like the scene is jut too big for 32-bit.  You could try reducing the sizes of the texture jpegs, that's usually where most of the RAM gets eaten up.

  • Thank you I'll try that right now. In the meantime, there's only three textures in the entire scene - on the backdrop and the character's eyes. The rest are visual shaders.

  • M'kay. With 64bit it was 100% cpu (of course) and only 3.73 GB. It was 4.10 when I had my browser open but I closed it.

With 32 bit cpu didn't hav a chance to get to 100% and GB stopped at 3.10.

Pretty sure my RAM isn't getting maxed. Unless I checked wrong.

3.10 may be all it could get in 32-bit, what Operating System?

Isn't 32 bit on some HW/SW configurations limited to 3.# GB RAM?

  • Fixmypcmike (love the handle btw): I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on both my machines. I should point out that on the machine I'm typing right now, 32 bit was having no issues. I only ran iray, though. I don't hav it on here anymore to test the cartoon render. Hrm. I'll run an iray render real quick, see what happens.

nonesuch00: I have no idea what you just said. LOL. I'm guessin you mean that when it got to 3.1 it was maxed.

While trechnically a 32-bit application should be able to use 4 GB, depending on the hardware and software you may not have access to the full amount because of system overhead.  That seems the likely reason, 3.1 GB is a common maximum.

  • Well, I went to test and iray wasn't even an option. I guess when the technical half wakes up tomorrow I can get him to update my video driverfs and see if that helps?

I also loaded lipsync, which asked me for mimic pro when I clicked a button, and I'm going.. wwait. Wait. Wait. How do I get mimic pro? Has DAZ limited this option? That would be VERY bad.

Iray is only available in 64-bit

  • I probably was clicking the wrong icon when working then. :_p Figures.

I'm saying and I've seen it with my own eyes - 32 bit programs can't use more than about 3 GB RAM. I was surprised as anyone when I found that out on my Windows 7 32 bit OS back when I still used it.

  • Well, so long as it works I wouldn't worry. I've never had DAZ 32 bit crash on such a simple render before. In fact I normally do far more complex ones. But I've no idea what's going on with it.

Well I don't know the particulars of your scene but DAZ should generate a crash dump and you can file a bug with DAZ. You likely won't get the quick help you need though. I've waited 6 months and more before Unity fixes bugs that cause me problems and they don't notify me they've fixed them it's just that one day I'll try the same thing again and it works. The customer base and number of bugs and new development is generally to large and goes to fast for much personal attention when reporting these things unless you have a big wallet book.

  • It's a start. How do I find this dump? It crashes so completely, everything goes down. I had listed the particulars of the render at the opening. It really only has like 6 things in it and most of it is just shader colors, no textures.

I tried doing a simple figure using no tooning and it went. Maybe I need to reinstall my shaders.  Just shooting in the dark here on that.

Next time it dumps is will ask you where to say the dump in a zip file and save it to where you tell it to in a DAZ Studio dialogue pop-up. I was surprised that the dialogue did not allow me to send the dump to DAZ really like Unity 3D's does.

  • Ah. Disappoint. It crashes so completely I'm not even getting asked. It just goes down. Wanted to make sure my video drivers were up to date today but the technical half had to go to work for a double shift. Maybe tomorrow!!
