If I add a tag to an item that isn't in Smart Content, it... doesn't do anything. It doesn't come up in search in Smart Content or Content Library.

Is this expected behavior?

For example, I have Dynamic Jogging Pants (from Optitex) for M4. I was hoping I could easily add it as something I can find in search by tagging it 'Dynamic.'

But, no.

Presumably if I go through all the burning hoops to add metadata, maybe it'll start working, but one big reason I want to USE tags is to skip the bother.

    Full 4.9

Oh duh. I think I figured it out. I had 'filter by context' checked (because I've never noticed it before). UNselecting it makes tags work properly. Yay!

But thanks to you and (I think?) Havos for pointing out tag functionality.

I find the normal approach to metadata incredibly complicated and confusing. Adding tags to everything? WAAAAY easier, particularly for all those Poser hierarchy items that don't easily fit. Also a lot faster in case the content gets wiped or something.

You backup tags the same way you backup custom categories or metadata, using Export User Data.
