Migration to a new machine

I've just built a new rig which, like the old one, runs Windows 10 from an SSD (Drive C:)

I also run DAZ 4.9 from drive C on this new computer as well as DIM and postgre etc.

My assets were on drives P and R on the old machine; I have physically moved the drives into the new PC and mapped them with the letters as before.

Hence, my drive configurations should be the same as before.

Can anyone walk me through what I need to do ensure the following are the same as in the old computer; I have spent ages organising them.

DIM - ie installed files

Content Libraries (across a couple of drives)

Thanks

  • First, export your old database, and reimport on the new computer, that should preserve the categories you've already setup. No guarantee though.

I stopped using smart content because of that exact issue, three months of organizing and the database corrupted. so i went back to folder organization, fewer moving parts to break.

DIM, you'll just need to change the various locations you plan to download to and install to via the settings menu.

Content libraries. If you haven't changed anything, all you'll need to do is remap them in Content directory mananger.

    Thanks,

I'm afraid you will have to walk me through that click-by-click as I cant find "export old database" menu nor how the new computer would access that location as the computers are not on a network.

From the options menu (rectangle with horizontal lines in the upper corner of the Content Library or Smart Content pane) > Content DB Maintenance > Export User Data

The data is exported to the Runtime:Support folder in the first Daz Studio Format content folder.  The file(s) are named UserData_1.dsx (and 2, etc., if needed).

Thanks, I believe that allows me to backup and restore My Categores as I have ordered references to the assets. So to confirm: from the installation (DAZ 4.8) on old machine it should crate UserData_1 in (my configuration) P:\DAZ3D_Originals\Runtime\Support. I can now move P drive into new machine (named drive P therein also).

    Please, now what?

From the Content DB Maintenance menu, Re-import Metadata

    Thanks,

I put that P drive in the new machine.

I then tried that (I assume it knows UserData_1 without me having to specify it); but it only shows the default categories, and not the ones I've organised.

Nor does it set up "DAZ Studio Formats" and "Poser Formats" the way they should be, as on the old machine.

You need to set up the content locations in Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager

I'll have a go at doing the easy ones manually and see how it goes.

However, I have a over a hundred poser runtimes I've added manually. Is there anything that I can copy across, or will I have to go through all of that again (or not bother as the case might be.)

    Thanks again

    Yes, yes and thrice yes!

I do believe that has done near enough close to what I wanted - so thank you guys again.

I'm sure I will become more befuddled as my configuration goes on, but that has saved a whole heap of work.
