Shader Mixer w/ Iray - no previews?

Is there any way to get useful shader previews while using Iray? Currently, all the previews I tried just render a flat, dark gray where 3delight has a shader-ified sphere against a blue, red, light gray background. When I tried messing with the render settings, nothing seemed to make a difference. I attached screenshots of a brick under each engine.

    I've been playing with it lately trying to decouple the tiling from the main shader (so far I've got a shader with separated tilers in the shader mixer window that consolidates them all with a parenthetical number in actual DS).  I have a similar frustration.

    Isn't tiling per-image in Iray? Adjustable in the Image Editor dilogue.
