As requested, some quick Iray tests of the Flashlight in the $4/$3 sale category.

Rendered with just the flashlight against a scene prop. Scene only rendering settings.

It seems to be working pretty much as any normal spotlight parented to a prop.

  • Thanks, Isidorn!  In the promo picture there seems to be a little extra something.  Does that little extra bit not show up in Iray?  Can you see what it is that makes that and does it even show up in 3Delight?  I'm thinking it is in one of the surface settings.

I've no idea, tbh. I used it from the product library and all I found in the folder was the flashlight, which then in the scene tab is a prop with a spotlight parented to it. That "little extra something" was what I was wondering about too, if it would work in Iray. I guess it don't. Can't investigate right now though, with my computer locked up with another project.

  • Thanks, @Isidorn!

I'm happy to say that I've actually got a render going in Iray!  Yay!  Looks like my DS is up and running in Linux which I'm very happy about.  There are still some problems to solve.  Like CMS isn't working yet.  I'll have to work on that.  Since that isn't up and running, yet, I can only find things through the Content Library in the folders.  My preferred method was with the alphabetic listing, but that isn't available so I'm guessing that is part of the database.  My old save files all seem to have problems since I didn't didn't have my library mapped to the same place.  Any scenes that I really want to use like those I was working on when the crashed happen will have to be fixed.  I'll have to open each up and find all of the things it can't find so DS can load them.  Luckily, I only have a few really current files I need to worry about.  The older ones can wait until I decide to reopen them if I ever decide to do another render for whatever reason.

Bad news is that loading files is takes a little longer, I think.  I never thought to time it in DS.  It seems a little longer in Linux.  However, once everything is loaded, everything is super fast.  Faster than when working in Windows.  Rendering even seems to be faster.  Imagine that!  I set things up in Linux and my render times have actually decreased.  Considering I render CPU only, and renders take forever in Windows, sometimes, I'm very happy about that.

Anyway, it isn't stellar, here is my first render in the new install in Linux.  No playing around in the terminal trying to get graphics drivers to play any games this time if I have problems. I've learned my lesson there.  This is Dmitri by DarwinsMishap.

    Hi

Nice to know you are making lots of progress. Step by step.... Having worked with Postgres before, I know there can be permissions issues so good luck with that. To me, it looks like he is staring at a linux screen contemplating his next move.

Speaking of flashlights... I modeled one in Carrara earlier this year for a Carrara Challenge but ended up not using it. The pic below is one of 4 posted in Carrara Challenge #25 "Light and Shadow"... my post here. The ribs on the flashlight were created with a shader effect for Carrara and not a texture map... some info about making the flashlight can be found in my post. This pic is "Light"... I like my "Shadow" version better... both are just test renders.

  • Gee, a lot of activity on my page today!  :)  It is amazing how many times I have been on this site at one time or another today.  And, yet, not once did I have the time to go into my own thread.

@wdgjohn  I like that shadow version, too.  That's a nice looking flashlight.  The one thing that has always kind of irked me about flashlights when used in Iray is the the light doesn't get that shadow from the bulb that is easily faked in 3Delight and even Poser.  None of the flashlights I have can be made to shine a very realistic light as in the promo image for that light that I linked above.  I'm not quite sure how it is doing it, but apparently it must be something Poser specific.

I would think that possibly some type of set up with gobos would work but they would be visible and not work very well in a scene only as a light source for the scene.  I'll have to ponder the issue some more because it would be nice to have a flashlight with a light that actually looks like a flashlight light is coming from it.

Yeah, DarwinsMishap always does great skin!  I'm not sure if the scar is from the MR or if that was added specifically for this character.  If I had to guess, DM probably added it because most of the MRs I've gotten my hands on don't usually have scars.  Those are the types of things you add to a skin to make it more unique.  As such, the attention to detail that DM puts into his/her characters is phenomenal.  Little things like a scar here or there really part of what makes characters so unique.  DM has some very unique characters..

I don't think I've every asked if DarwinsMishap is a he or a she.  In my head, I think he, but I don't know for sure.  Maybe he or she will pipe up and let us know.  :)

He looks great, thank you for using him for your test. :)

You're welcome.  I just happened to pick G3M to test out.  I don't have very many G3M characters and most of the ones I have are yours.  I had started a render with Dmitri before the crash that I hadn't finished because I was trying to do something unusual with his tattoos so he never got rendered yet.  I'm not sure what I was trying to do with the tattoos is possible, but I'm still doing some research on that.  So, I figured I might as well use him for my little test until his real render is ready.  :)

When I went to load the first saved scene I wanted to use, it couldn't find any materials and I ended up with all blocky figures.  It was quicker to just start a new scene for my test.  I will probably have to remap where DS looks for materials as I load the scene files as I need them since my DS drive isn't mapped the same as the old setup.

  • Just a thread update on what I'm doing.  I have Linux almost all squared away.  There are one of two must have games er, programs that I can't get working in Linux quite yet so I took my little 1 TB drive and installed Windows 7 from disk.  After installation, it has been updating for the last two days and I'm basically in Windows wasteland waiting for it to decide it's done so I can diconnect the internet to this drive.  The Windows 7 drive is going offline as soon as this freaking update is done and will never go online again!  Never using Windows as my main operating system again.  My computer's meltdown was completely Windows 10 based and I haven't found anything wrong with any of my hardware.

I have DS up and running in Linux without cms, but I hope to get that all worked out soon.  At least, I can move around and render in it.  I'll try to get Carrara up and running it soon, too, along with Hexagon.  Not sure about Bryce.  That might be one of the few I may have to keep in Windows.  We'll see once I get around to trying it.  I have a couple of tutorials that I'm working on and I'll post those once they are ready.  I can't finish them until I get back out of Windows.

You'll know I'm back in Linux when I start posting more renders and the tutorials are up.  In the meantime, I'm enjoying seeing everyone else's renders both in the forums and in the gallery!  :)

@Linwelly, do you have PlayOnLinux?  That is the easiest way to get the 32 bit version up and running quickly.  Best part is that you don't need to use the terminal for any of it.  Let me know if you run into problems.  I managed to get DIM to actually connect to my account and download and install without problems with the latest version of PlayOnLinux and the latest version of Wine.  I'm still confused as to whether I actually needed to install both because I think PlayOnLinux actually installs Wine, too, but I'm not positive about that.

The instructions here might help.  It is a little outdated as there is a newer version of Wine.  Because of this and possible improvements, I did find that a couple of instructions aren't needed anymore.  The whole bit about the manual install wasn't needed because DIM connected to and successfully installed products.  So, the bit about manual install can be ignored unless you have problems with that when you come to it.  I do plan to try and install the 32 bit version of DS to see if I can get the database stuff working.  So far, I'm not having much luck in that department.  I haven't been able to get Connect working either.  What I do have working is the file tree in the Content Library tab.  I'm still hoping to get things up and completely working, but for now I'm taking a little break so I can actually do some renders.  The plan to day is to see if I have any problems with any plugins like LAMH and Pegasus.

Dependencies that you need are:  vcrun2005; vcrun2010; tahoma; d3dx9; dotnet20; dotnet40; Microsoft corefonts.

    Good luck!  :)

My system is still rather bare to the moment, so nothing of that sort yet, as well I would need the 64 version, but I check the Link you gave to see if there is one available.

There are instructions about what to do in the readme of the 3dellight standalone and its the Liux version as well so I don't need the WINE for that ( will try with that 3deligth standalone before installing the full DS on that Labtop so I hope to send stuff just there for rendering)

So far I managed all of that reinstall myself but that was where I met my ends. But I'm luck to have a software developer for a hubby, so I will bother him into helping me this eveneningdevil

You know, when I read this and answered the first time, I didn't get the reference to the 3Delight standalone like I should have.  I just realized reading this again what you were actually saying.  I thought you were talking about installing the 32 bit version of DS.  I forgot that 3Delight actually comes as it's own thing separate from DS! I feel like such a dummy right now!

So, since I'm not exactly familiar with what you're doing could you explain it to me? I didn't realized you could use 3Delight alone.  How does one do that? What can you do with it?

3delight comes a a free program to download for different application but can also be used as a standalone version where you can somehow ( still have to find out that one but must be some kind of file) send the data of what you want rendered and get a png at the end. As I never tried it yet I'm not very informed, all I got is from their hompage 3delight.com

To get the link to the download you need to provide an email adress.

I hope to get the hole thing setup as a micro renderfarm with my main computer for working with DS and my Labtop for the rendering sending the files though our home network.

  • Sounds interesting.  Let me know all about it once you've got is all set up!  I'd be very interested.

If you are looking for an additional render engine for Carrara give Luxcore a try... it is more realistic than Carrara native renderer and appoaches Octane or iRay. A link for the latest version is http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/1722001/#Comment_1722001 but read the whole discussion.

Oops... forgot to mention that it is by the same folks ShpericaLabs who created Luxus which is no longer being developed. Luxcore has it's own render engine to replace the need for Luxrender that Luxus needs.

Hi Knittingmommy, there is a lot to read for me to catch up. Good to see your laboratory was so active during my absence and so much people participating.

  • I'm actually rendering again.  I was going to make a post with my latest showing the original with the postworked version, but I had a little hickup with the screenshots.  I also got real busy with last minute details for the It's Raining Men Again contest which is now live here in the Art Studio.  I'll get my little halloween image tutorial posted tomorrow.  I tried a new technique for me and it really made a big difference in the final image!

  • Looking forward to it!

wow you have been busy preparing the New raining men contest! Thanks for taking such an initiative, that sure is a lot of work!

Yes, I've been busy with that!  It was a lot to take on, but I loved the contest last year and I really hope it is as popular this year.  We managed to get some great prizes thanks to our wonderful donors so I hope that will help get a lot of entries.  Now that it's live, I get a little bit of a breather and just have to answer questions as they pop up until the end of the contest when I get really busy again wrapping everything up.

So, awhile back I was working on postworking an image and Serene Knight gave me a great tip on making and using an overlay for highlights and stuff.  You can find that information over on her thread SereneKnight's Sci-fi Fun.  I ended up making a copy of my image and turning an overlay to enhance the image and make certain colors really pop in your image.  Thank you, Serene Knight, because that was a great tip and not one I had ever heard of, yet, in my postworking research.  It really enhanced my image which I then entered in Zev0's aging contest.  I didn't win, but I had great fun using those aging morphs!  :)  I'll have to show the before and after images of that picture sometime.

Anyway, that got me to thinking.  If I could do that to brighten things up or enhance sections that I wanted to enhance, why couldn't I do the same with deep dark shadows that I wanted to enhance?  Turns out, there is no reason why the same technique won't work with shadows.

Here is my original image that I experimented with recently:

It's a little washed out and not quite what I had in mind when I envisioned this image.  So, I took it into GIMP 2.9 to see what I could do with it.  Unfortunately, I don't have this working in Linux quite yet so I had to take it into the small Windows 7 I installed for those tough to do in Linux programs until I get them figured out.  I am not giving up those NIKCollection filters now that I have used them!  I'm a little addicted to playing with them.

I took my image into the NIKColor Effects filter and converted my image to B/W and used the Dynamic Contrast to get this image:

Here is a screenshot of the filter in use:

I turned that High Contrast image into an overlay and set it at about 67%.

I basically just moved the slider up and down until I got a look that I liked.  I combined the two images and I really liked the effect.  I got this:

which I posted over in my gallery and to the NPR thread.  I also posted to the PC Anniversary contest because I had qualifying items used in the image.  I'm pretty happy with my final results with this experiment.  :)  I'll be even happier when I can get the NIKCollection working in Linux.
