HDRI Dome JPG too bright & washed out (Iray)

Hey guys,

whenever I use a JPG as HDRI in Iray, it´s colors are washed out and it seems like something reduces the opacity of the image. Take a look at the attachments...

anyone know what´s going on?

Thanks and best!

You have the brightness turned up for the map which will make it very light. You also have the intensity turned down which wont do much as the map brightness will overcome that. Turn both back to the default settings and then check the gamma setting for the image it might be set at 1.00 but Studio is set at 2.2.

Also, JPG files are not HDRIs.  You can use them in the same place, but they do NOT have the high dynamic range that real HDR and EXR images have.  Which is why everything ends up washed out.

Jpegs are usable for backdrop images.

Some HDR 'sets' come with a 'small' HDR/EXR file to use for lighting and a large/hires jpeg for the backdrop.

Unfortunately, the way Iray is set up, that combination doesn't work well (or it isn't simple to make it work well).  Iray uses a virtual dome, so if 'Draw Dome' is ON, then the same image used for lighting will become the backdrop...

So if you have a small, lores HDR image, you can have 'Draw Dome' OFF and then insert it in an image editor....(backdrop is the bottom layer, render is top layer).

You're getting a typical photo for bright sunlight without a polarizing lens to filter brightness. Once of the things that isn't obvious about the HDR files is when they give a jpg they are not represenative of the data in them which will contain light/image for 8 different stops.
