Edit > Background... -- how to keep aspect ratio?

I'd like to use a reference image as a guide to create a character from a drawing.

File > New

Edit > Background...

In the dialog, I choose a .jpg i downloaded from deviant art:

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/055/c/1/alita___get_your_ass_to_mars_by_polarityplus-d4qvojv.jpg

It stretches to fill the entire viewport, making it useless. How can I force DS4.5 to display the image in its original ratio, centered in the viewport?

Thanks in advance.

If you use a Plane Primitive of the correct size that you need, and apply the image in the Duffuse channel in the Surfaces tab, that should work.

All you do is go into Render Setting and set the dimensions to "custom" and then enter the width and height dimensions of your image.
The image above is 778px × 950px for example
