I purchased Ken Gillands ostrichset for Songbirds after verifying there was a male and a female Matpose.
but it turns out that for both genders the same texture is used, nl tje male black and white.
while the female ostrich surely is brownish
I feel a bit cheated.

My CC ran dry so have to wait on that one but it doesn't sound Ken to forget that minor detail.
Did you check the .pdf manual? Or take a look inside the texture folder?
The other place to keep an eye on is his website as that's where he makes available updates and sometimes little extras for his birds.
Thank you for the information ...
I looked at the ads and all show male and females looking alike... ???
Very unusual for Ken!
http://www.empken.com/SongbirdReMix/
I opened the texture files and there are plumage files for each subspecies in a F and a M variation
but F and M both have the same opaque black texture.
I tried to edit in Photoshop one using the bumpfile as a selection and change black to pale browning grey.
but that looked like SH****.
in the pdf read me he hower mentions the correct colour of the females.
Pitty he did not include it correct..
I know Noggin made an ostrich a few years ago only in the male variation.
when questioning him about that he replied that he could not find a satisfying texture for the female plumage.
Male and females do have different texture maps. Females vary significantly in color from a blackish-grey to the brown within their own species. I chose a more greyish route. I'm sorry you're disappointed with the grey choice. Perhaps I'll consider adding browner option in my freebies.
edit: solution discovered :-)
A browner option indeed would be welcome
Itb could be that my creen isn't the youngest anymore and therefore quite dark, but the difference between the female and male texture is not showing clear enough. I need a bit more of contrasting shades.
btw.
using bumps in stead of colormaps over sandy pale brownish diffuse colour isn't much of a solition either
as shown below
The map arrangement is fairly complex (the main disfuse texture is spread over 4 maps)- that's why you're not getting satisfactory results. It's always a tough decision on where to stop on one of my sets. I considered adding the browner version of the female which as you've pointed is more often seen in juveniles. I even looked at including baby ostriches and Emus at one point (they'll perhaps hybrid models in the future)... but it as always it comes down to deadlines and trying to keep my sets affordable, so the line was drawn at 5 species with the mature female coloring. My intention was/is to eventually throw in a browner texture for juvenile/female ostriches on to my freebies at SongbirdReMix.com. I'll fiddle with a browner version of the Southern female Ostrich later today.
Currently, there is one freebie for the Ostrich-- a Mimic confirguration file-- if you want talk your ostrich speak. Also there is a new "fictional" bird character I uploaded yesterday, the Mockingjay for the base Songbird Remix set.
Well - the promos don't show a difference either, apart from the rump feathers.
this discussion may give the impression I think it is not a good product.
but don't get me wrong, taking a closer look how the textures were applied, I do conclude It is a fine achievement and a good product.
Since you are here Ken, can I just ask somehing?
The freebies on your webpage have a DAZ Studio version, but they seem to be .DAZ files, and the scene can't find the data folder for them, do I have to save a few SBRM scenes before these will work to populate the data content?
Thanka for the freebies by the way, kind of you. The recent Mockingjay is in DSF format, so it is OK.
Here's a couple of renders with everything identical - same pose, camera, lighting, gamma correction turned off etc. even the same Ostrich morphology - except that one uses a male (SO African) texture while the other uses the female version (So African again).
Click to open if it doesn't animate in place.
Cheers,
Cliff
OK, it's subtle, but it's there!
Using Poser Pro 2012 I've also thrown this together - probably a bit TOO quickly to be honest - to show that it's possible to tweak the texture still further. This is brightened to 3 times the original brightness.
The feathers where they just meet the leg is trickier, as brightening those brightens the legs too... but as a quick fudge it is what it is :) Ken will be able to do MUCH better in the fullness of time. I'm generally more interested in motion than plumage ;)
In the meantime I would suggest brightening by less than 3 times to produce a more realistic result :)
Cheers,
Cliff
I use to create all studio versions with a quick load option via a Daz Studio scene file (.daz). The reason the data folders aren't included in the freebies is because to do so, I'd be giving away the model too. Last spring I changed the format usage for DAZ Studio-- dumping the .daz format and simply having users load the songbird remix model from the Poser .cr2 in runtime and apply the Studio charaqcter and material settings. If you look in any of the studio freebies you will find the characters/material settings are also included. I should go ahead and update the Studio freebies with the new direction and the removal of the .daz file.
The reason I use the .CR2 as a base instead of the newer .DUF format is simple. The .cr2 format is very easy for me to edit and add newer features and provide to all of you free of "charge", plus it work in both Poser and Studio without special tweaks. Plus, the current version of .duf doesn't like the Songbird ReMix model (that's being fixed in the next version of Studio).
Thank you for replying Ken.
Yes, I see now that there is a DS script as well in the free package for loading the DS texture and pose. The scene file just threw me a bit. Thanks for these extra birds, much appreciated.
In my Freebies at www.SongbirdReMix.com, I’ve uploaded a couple treats…
For Songbird ReMix Ostrich owners, a browner version of the female Northern African and Southern Ostriches. This color variation is prefect for young females and juvenile ostriches of either sex. I also have an Mimic configuration file for the Ostriches for you animators.
For anyone who has the Songbird ReMix base model, I’ve also upload the fictional “Mockingjay” from the Hunger Games book series.
great thanks ken !
That's the idea Ken.
Great stuff, thank you so much.
PS.
I looked up Ostriches in Wikipedia and to my surprice there was a drawing of claws on the ostrich wings.
never knew about that. Wonder if those have any use.
What a nice surprize to come home too ... was just out catching a CC to buy the Ostrich package. Thank you.
great thanks ken !
great render kamion !
A few quick renders from my laptop in D/S4.0
[the quilted collar is well, quilted. forgot to change it back before rendering]
Hey, I recognize that quilting pattern! (Still on sale for a couple more hours, too!)
I was valiantly resisting buying the ostriches until I saw the sulky. Then my will crumbled like... I dunno, something crumbly. ;-) Ken's birds never disappoint. I've been hooked since I first bought Pet Shop to get a cockatiel.
Oh yes it's a lovely set thank you. Blankets/throws ... always a nice extra for buggy rides. Although I'm not certain about racing sulkies but hay.
