Is possible to lock temporarily a selection?

This is a basic tool in Max and other programs. Some times I need to return lots of times to the scene tree because I clicked outside.

I talk about locking the selection itselft of the object, not the movements or any other property.

So you want the item selected to stay selected even if you click something else?  I'm assuming the background architecture is the problem?  In the Scene pane, there's a column headed S for Selectable -- click on that for the building to make it unselectable.

I noticed that and it would solve part of the problem if clicking the start of the tree would set all as non interactive. But from I can see you only can do one each time. Is there the posibility of changing several at same time clicking when all are selected? I mean, I dont want to go through a large tree setting non selectable a large number of items.

The other part of the problem is clicking the background unselect, easy when moving the camera.

To put an example, trying to move a null that controls the eyes, the controls are small and easy to click in the background or character or environment.

You can select all the items, then under the Create Menu > Create New Group.  Then using the above method, on the group, it will 'freeze' all the items in the group with a single click.

Select all the items you want to make unselectable (you can use Shift-click and Ctrl-click to select multiple items), then go to the Parameters pane and under "Display" click "Selectable" to toggle it for all of them.  You might need to go to the options menu (rectangle with horizontal lines in the upper corner of the Parameters pane) and tick "Consolidate Properties".

Mjc1016, Thanks I thought that group stands for selection group, but from I can see it moves the selected items outside of the tree, something that breaks characters and clothing. Is there any setting to avoid it?

    Fixmypcmike, thanks, that works.

If you include everything...clothing and all, it won't break anything.  Basically you are transferring parts of the 'tree' to the group and if you keep them together, then any relationships they had will be the same.

When I select multiple items in the scene tab and toggle 'selectable' in the 'display' menu, only the first item I selected toggles off. I wanted a way to hide/unhide multiple items without grouping them as well, but its the same thing. Only the first object I select in a multiple selection will toggle selectable or visible. I'm using 4.8.0.59.

Go to the Parameter pane options menu (that rectangle with the horizontal lines in the upper corner) and make sure "Consolidate Properties" is checked and "Display Separate Items" is unchecked.

Thanks Mike. That's one of those buttons I pressed to see what would happen. It appears I left it pressed. On the upside, I now roughly understand what those things do.  :)  Actually thats pretty cool how you can tun those things on and off.
