Which Graphics Card/s

Ok, so I have two choices for the PC I'm building when it comes to the graphics card & my budget.

I can either get 2 4GB 980's or a 1080, which would be best for rendering in iRay.

I know the 1080 isn't supported yet, but when it is, which would be

The 1080. More vram. Likely as fast (or close enough) to 2 980's.

I know but it has a lot less CUDA cores than the 2 980's, does that not matter?

    2 980's in SLI: 4096 CUDA cores

    1080 has around 2048

The 1080 CUDAs run faster. From all the benchmarks I've seen a 980 has 60% the power of a 1080. 2 980s might be 10-20% faster but it is also limited by 4gb of ram which can limit you in the future.

Wait until the gee whiz marketing has slowed or when the 2ndary market gets in gear to purchase the 1080, you will get a better card for a better price. The other issue is the bench marks are for gaming, how that compares to rendering I do not know if anyone knows.
