help please with 2 gpus.....

hi guys,

i was just wondering if you good people could point me in the right direction please,i have a gtx 970 and a gtx 980ti installed in the same machine, not in sli as i know thats not possible,i just have them installed together to use the cuda cores.

here's what happened when i installed just the gtx 980ti,i rendered a scene that i had saved and it made 3,000 iray iterations in 4mins,so i then installed the gtx 970 aswell as the gtx 980ti,i rendered the same scene with both gpus installed and i got 7,000 iray iterations in 4 mins,so obviously a big improvement with both cards installed.

so i shut the pc down for a few hours then came back to it......fancied testing again with the same scene which i did,but for some reason it rendered at 3,000 iray iterations then still with both cards installed,i cannot understand the big drop back down,as if i only had just the gtx 980ti installed.

i have checked with nvidia control panel and both cards are still showing and i have them both selected for cuda,gpu-z is showing both cards, bios is showing both cards and daz itself is still showing both cards on render settings.

would anyone have any idea at all why this could be...is there a setting i am missing??....any help would really be appreciated.

thanks

If the scene is over 4GB, the max for the 970, then I understand that only the 980ti will be used.

To test try a different scene, and maybe reduce the render resolution by a lot to get the scene below 4GB - if reducing it actually lowers it enough, as it isn't a big difference, but might be enough.

  • hi nic,

thanks for the reply......the scene is just 1 character,t pose, nothing else.

  • just a quick update incase anyone has experienced the same and found a solution, what i have noticed by using gpu-z is that when i am rendering with either card or both cards together, the load is bouncing around on both of them, either when using them single or at the same time, neither are getting to 100% load, they are bouncing between 85-95%.

Doesn't matter how small the scene is, if it takes more than 4GB then the 970 won't be used. How much RAM does GPUz state it is using when it is rendering?

  • nic,its saying 2179mb memory used
