Has Anyone tried to use the IRAY Shaders in Carrara and how close to Carrara shaders are they?
Comments
I would not use Iray shaders in Carrara. Carrara has its own shader engine. If you want to do Iray in Carrara you need to use Otoy's Octane for Carrara plugin. Daz has not released a Carrara Iray render engine yet.
You need to tweak them, just as with 3Delight shaders. We played around a little back when we were investigating Stonemason's Fern Lake

These were generally the "wrapper around some image maps" kind of shader. Not sure how usable procedural shaders would be.
Thanks for the answers.
TangoAlpha - That was exactly what I was wondering just what tweaking would have to be done.
Normal maps never get picked up, so they need to be set (very common in Iray shaders, but appearing more and more in 3Delight too). As with 3Delight, maps get multiplied with a shade of grey. Maps may conform to the PBR Metallic - Roughness paradime, which isn't a great fit to Carrara (Metallic -> Highlight and Roughness -> Shininess seems to produce okay results, but you may still need to adjust, add reflections etc.
Emissive surfaces: Dunno; haven't tried.
This would be a great thread to post the results of any experimenting - keep things together etc...
...so the bottom line is you have to do a gruntload of adjustments and messing around in a 2D app to use content that only has Iray shaders then. For something big like Urban Sprawl 3, that could take days if not weeks.
For a while there were Carrara shader kits for the major Character/Figures. Have they stopped making those?
Genesis 3 figures do not currently load in Carrara so no Carrara skin shaders have been offered for them. Ringomonfort is the most common vendor for that sort of thing. Not sure if there is any intention to resume Carrara-optimized skin shaders if and when the newest characters and figures become Carrara compatible.
EDIT: Correction, I just saw a thread started by Darwinsmishap asking for potential testers for new characters sometime in the future.
.
...thank you.
At the present I still primarily work with G2 as I really don't have the funds to make G3 useful (even in Daz). The main issues I have with G3 is the change made to the skin mapping structure and addition of posing bones. The former makes it impossible to use older skins without some type of conversion, while the later affects older hair content as instead of one neck bone there are now two (and most older hair parents the morph controls to the neck).
