install imported OBJ to content library?

Hi, seems like a dumb question, but I couldn't figure out an obvious solution:

I've got a bunch of useful props which I've modelled as OBJ's.

I've got no problem importing them, but how to add them to the content or Smart content libary so they're available without doing the import each time?

Would appreciate a pointer to the (obvious answer I'm surely missing)

    What application?

If DAZ Studio, save as a scene subset.

File>Save as>Support Assets>Figure prop asset. You will be prompted for a file name - this is a preset to load the item, and should go somewhere you can find it (e.g. Props\Prop Type\Item or group of items). The options dialogue asks you for a content directory (this is the Data folder that will be used for the asset files) and Author/Product names (which determine the sub-folders of the Data fiolder used for the files - for conversions I suggest setting the Author name to something like SourceSiteConversions or AuthorConversions so you keep them distinct from your own work).

  • Thanks Richard . . . that wasn't so obvious after all.

The .obj files can be accessed from the Content Library pane by adding the folder they are in in Studio's Content Directory Manager under Other formats.

Is saving as a support asset preferred over the scene subset in all cases, or does it relate in some way to the obj import?

Saving as a Support Asset is considered "doing it properly" as it produces native D|S content and data files exactly the same as anything you'd buy from the store. It's also as robust as normal DAZ content, since all the converted files in the /data/ folder are automatically created in the proper subfolders. Simply saving as a Scene Subset means all the /data/ files are stuffed into an "auto_adapted" subfolder, which after a while ends up badly cluttered and you can't find anything easily if you ever need to save or archive your converted objects.

A note of caution; the procedure for saving as Support Assets is not a click-click-click-go thing. There is a point in the Save Options dialog where you must enter creator and product names — if you just click-click through all this, then everything you convert will be created by you, and will be part of a product named "Product". This isn't much better than the Scene Subset route.

FWIW, in case you're wondering "why should I ever bother saving as a Scene Subset if it's so limited", it's supposed to be used to save things that are already in Support Asset form.
