Missing Materials - new install of 4.9

Was away from rendering for a while (I initially had Daz Studio 4.8 installed, then had updated to 4.9).   I'm on a new machine and downloaded everything I had previously purchased.  So far so good.

Victoria 7 figure loaded a-ok and I then dropped in a primitive (plane) so I could create a light object (simulate a soft-box).  In the Loading | Creating tab, I selected that object.  Under Surfaces | Presets, things are strange.  Under Materials > Iray, it only lists the various materials for the figures I have installed (e.g. Victoria 7, Summer for Victoria, etc.).   And under Presets > Shaders, there's only a single entry named 'Other' (Subsurface Base Shader).

I am not seeing any of the basic Iray shaders for metals, plastics, the light-emitting material, etc.

Anyone else seeing this?  I think I'll completely uninstall and start over again.  Seems like I have a botched installation somehow.

Are you looking in Smart Content? If so, do you have the Filter by Context checked? That limits the items displayed to be things compatible with the item selected in the scene pane.

I had done that earlier, but no luck.  Smart content checked our unchecked results in presenting the same limited list.

I'm still in the middle of a complete re-install (I'm using OS X 10.11.5).  I also deleted ~/Application Support/Daz 3D as well as all preference files.

Everything has installed so far ok, but I was presented with a message in Install Manager (version 1.1.0.64):

"Please hang on while we download and install DAZ Studio Pro and the Genesis Content System for you.  It will launch automatically after it is done downloading".

Well it's been about 15 minutes and my network monitor is not showing any download activity.  Also, no sign of any separate application installer launch. I don't recall Daz being installed by two separate processes and didn't receive this message the other day when doing my original install.  I suppose I ultimately cleared something out by zapping the Application Support and preferences files.

"Please hang on while we download and install DAZ Studio Pro and the Genesis Content System for you.  It will launch automatically after it is done downloading". is normal for a first install.

I'll try to call in a Mac expert.

Edit: Darn, he is on vacation. I hope another Mac person drops by in the mean time to help.

That "Please hang on message..." seems to be a glitch.  That shows when you launch the installer for the first time (since I zapped all files, it reset that as if it was the first time).  After all files though are downloaded and installed, that message shows up a second time.  I simply dismissed it and moved on.

However, I've now done the third installation.  This last time, I did a reboot after scrubbing all traces of Daz3D.  As before, able to log into my account, download the installer and it auto-installed all the basic files.  But still no basic Iray materials at all.  Only materials I see are those tied to the various default figures, clothing and hair.

So this leaves me to believe there is something not compatible with OS X 10.11.5 and that certain files end up not being included even in a completely clean install.

Tried the latest Beta as well; no luck.  Also, to add insult to injury, finding I'm having to force-quit the applications after choosing File | Quit (UI disappears, but process left hanging).

Giving up on this as it does seem Daz3D just doesn't like OS X 10.11.5

I'm on Mac 10.11.5.  I also have trouble with quitting and have to force quit.  I am waiting to see if the 4.9.3.37 version fixes it and if not, I'll put in a report.  I did, just now, have a successful quit, though it took some time.

As for the presets, they should be in Content Library>Shader Presets>Iray.

After three installs, no default Iray shaders show up in that location. It only includes shaders for the basic set of figures, hair and their clothing. No metals, no light emitting surface etc are sowing up.

Please open a support ticket regarding your installation issues.

Well, at least you know it's possibly not Mac oriented since there are many of us on Mac with the shaders.

I suspect it has something to do with a brand new install and that several files are now missing from the installers.  If one already had 4.8 or the earlier versions of 4.9 installed, I think you're OK.

Normally I don't repeat something 5 times, but sure glad I did.   This morning, decided to clean install again and just install three things: DAZ Studio 4.9, the Default Resources package and CMS for Mac.   This time, the install manager didn't give me the "Please hang on while we download and install..." message.

Inside DAZ Studio, I finally noticed that my 'Default Resources' icon as seen if opening up Products | Shaders | Iray (or any category that references that package), was gray/dimmed.  Double-clicked it to install and voila, materials are there!

So it seems that downloads/installs are done in two stages; first stage by the install manager itself and that "Please hang on" message was to tell users that it would automatically do the second stage.   But in my case, that never happened.  Also, if I remember correctly, that message was not deterministic in that sometimes it showed up at the very beginning after launching install manager, sometimes at the end (after installing the files).  Other times it came up twice.

Sure glad this was ultimately a simple fix.  I added notes to 222594 stating that the missing materials issue is fixed.  Later today I will file a separate issue regarding the failure of install manager to automatically download the default content.

Regarding the quit issue; yes, If I leave the app running, it seems to eventually quit, but the time to quit varies and can be well over a minute in duration.   Filed issue 222597 and attached a sample (as provided by the Sample Process option in the OS X Activity Monitor.

No, DIM should have isntalled the content completely - either the installation failed again or it wasn't properly logged in the CMS, what you saw was the behaviour for an item that hasn't been isntalled (according to the CMS), and then you installed it via Connect - so there's still something odd going on.

  • rsharprsharp Posts: 45

Richard, yes that is odd.  I can verify that I was always logged in to the install manager and DAZ Studio with my account credentials.

The items in DS should show up without needing to be logged in. It might be, if you closed DIM and immediately started DS, that the close down/start up failed to complete - but in that case restarting DS should have fixed the issue. Are other items installed through DIM showing up in DS, in Smart Content, Products, or Categories?

Richard, the only package that I had to manually install via Smart Content | Products, was the 'Default Resources' item.

Not sure what to make of that, then.
