Needed: Interior lighting for a dimly lit room

I am trying to illuminate an indoor scene in which the lighting should be fairly dim. I tried using an iray preset but couldn't get the effect I wanted. I tried spotlights, but they didn't work either. I finally used just a distant light. It works better than the other lights, but even at low (50%) intensity it's brighter than I want when rendered, and casts a shadow on the brow of one of the figures that persists no matter where or how I position the distant light. The iray preset I tried is one that came with the Daz 4.9 bundle. Can anyone recommend iray interior lighting that might give the diffuse light that I want? I should add that I am a novice at constructing scenes, especially when it comes to lighting, and I need to find something that is reasonably uncomplicated to use.

You may be better getting the desired distribution of light with brighter lights, then using Tone Mapping (or your image editor) to darken. Iray does not handle dim scenes, or scenes with a very strong contrast, well.
