    Moto, and Paul,

Thanks a lot for the suggestions on the lighting. I'll play around with them, and see what happens.

Oracle, if you really want to do more 'Trek art- and I know you mentioned wanting to do your own graphic novel some day- then make sure you find time to go through The List. Just about any standard thing you might need- and by that I mean stuff that's not "Story specific" can be found there.

Paul, are MM's converted ships part of the, list ?

Thanks for that suggestion as well, Madison.

I know that's one thing I have been meaning to do. Several months back, when my access to the internet was re-established as more consistent, I went through the list then, and one thing that I noticed is that most of the morphs, or at least the ones that I tried for M4 and V4 were no longer available, so I was a bit bummed about that, but as far as sets, clothes, skins, etc., I'm definitely going to have to go back through that list with a fine toothed comb. Thanks for the reminder though.

    Your friend
    Oracle

Part of the reason for that was probably that Werts' morphs were removed after someone accused him of breaking the distribution rules. I'm not going to judge whether the accusation had merit or not, since the rules are a little tricky, and I haven't looked into exactly what Werts included in his files.

There's no set-in-stone rule that says you have to use the latest model available- especially when you're doing still images. Now, if you're doing animation, then of course you want the best rigged figure you can find. But if the morphs and clothing for an older figure work for you, there's no reason not to use them. I've been using M3 for Spock and V3 for Jan since 2008- 4 years ago- Primarily because the others weren't out yet, but even if they had been, the morph package I use for Jan won't work for V4. I talked with Illusion Designs- the folks that came up with the package- and they said they tried to re-create the morph for V4 but the figures were too different. So I'm left with using V3 for Nova Trek till the series is done- some time around 2019.

Heck in book 3, I even had to resort to Poser 5's Don- because his head had the only morphs that would do what I wanted. And talk about trying to find clothes for a Poser 5 figure in this day and age!!!!

bwaomega, I had gathered that it probably was something along those lines. I think I came into things, meaning that I was just finding Studio, and getting into freebie collection and usage, about the time that all of this was going on. At this stage it doesn't matter why he removed them, and that was certainly his right. I wasn't here at the time, and at this point, it's water under the bridge.

Madison, I can understand what you're saying too about using M3 and V3. Is Jan a purchased morph, or is she a freebie from somewhere? It's too bad she doesn't work for V4, but I do have V3 as well. Although I have Studio 4.5, I originally got Studio 3 back when all the base figures were free, so that isn't the problem.

The problem is this little thing called cash/money. Unfortunately when I first found out about DAZ Studio from a friend of my brothers, shortly after that, I lost my job, due to the economy. I've had jobs since then, but they have both been in the same industry, and they have paid just enough to keep a roof over mine and my brother's heads, and there has been very little in the way of extra money for my 'addiction' (as my brother jokingly calls it, LOL). When I have bought something, it's normally something that I know I will get a fair amount of use of. Valiant and Courageous are prime examples. There have been some frivolous purchases, too, though, like Blank Boi and some others. All I'm trying to say is that, for now, freebies are my main source of content.

Vulcans and Andorians, Klingons and Romulans, can we please not turn our beloved Star Trek Thread into an apps war?

    Thank you!

A question to the group - Does anyone know what text font is used on the Starship Plaques? I am interested in making my own in 3D.

    Thank you again.

I believe the ship plaques use ITC Garamond Bold for their font with the quotes at the bottom of the plaques in Times New Roman (Italic).

Sorry about that, Matt. I didn't mean to make it sound like I was trying to.

I'm not sure, but I think there was something on DA with regard to what Fonts the maker used. I just don't remember where.

Looking at the font a little more, the font might also be Palatino Linotype. I'm sorry, but I'm having difficulty identifying the serifs on some of the letters as my eyes are not what they used to be. Anyway, I was utilizing the identifont website to try to id the font. If you have crisp examples of the letters and better eyesight, this site will help to id the font, but I do feel it is one of the two (ITC Garamond Bold or Palatino Linotype).

    Madison,

I've tried to stay on top of all the converted ships posted. I think I have them all so far. Shadowhawk has been harping on me to make sure I know about the latest and greatest release. I've been adding them by name or class, pretty much however the ships have been posted by name.

    All,

Thanks for the compliments everyone, but I do ask one thing....I go by Paul....PD just seems so impersonal.

    -Paul

Trust me all, when work doesn't have me moving around or I am not traveling I make sure he knows ALL ABOUT the new stuff related to Star trek or items that could be re-textured to work as Trek items. I blame him for infecting this Star Wars fan with the Trek bug so I make sure he is up to date! Sorry I have been quiet of late, at the last minute I was able to take time off to be home with my Kids for Christmas, or at least a close to it time, so it was a very sudden get ready and get gone kind of thing.

So I'm left with using V3 for Nova Trek till the series is done- some time around 2019.

This may not be of interest, and/or you may know already and have rejected the option for one reason or another, but in case you don't know and it might be of interest:

Genesis - which can be used in Poser 9/Pro 2012 now, of course - has a V3 morph available that will make it look just like V3. The morph is also split head/body so you can just have V3 head with V4 body ... or V5, S3, S4, S5, A3 etc etc body. And the GenX plugin will convert any V3 morphs to work with Genesis; it will even combine a mix of, say, 20 variously dialled V3 head morphs all together into one morph and transfer that single morph to Genesis if that's preferable for the purpose. And if you dial up the GenX transferred V3 head morphs on Genesis with the Genesis V3 base head morph applied, the Genesis head will look exactly the same as the original V3 morphed head.

So you could recreate your ... 'Jan', is it? ... character head on Genesis exactly, with whatever body you liked below - the same V3 shape with transferred V3 body morphs, or a V4, V5, S5 etc based body. And that would be a Jan with the normal Genesis feature of being a latest tech, weight mapped, very well bending/posing figure. Plus V3 clothing and hair can be transferred over with autofit in DS before then loading into Poser.

You would want DS4.5 (free), plus the DSON loader for Poser if using the figure in Poser. And you would need the (not free) GenX plugin, the GenX V3 add-on, and the V3 base shape for Genesis. (You don't need DS4.5 to load and use Genesis in Poser - just the DSON loader plugin for Poser. But you would need DS4.5 simply to run the GenX plugin to convert the V3 head morphs to Genesis. Not then to use them - after doing the conversion, DS4.5 can just be forgotten again as the next load of Genesis in Poser would then have the V3 head morphs appearing in it to dial up in Poser.)

Note that while Genesis will take V4 and M4 textures (as well as various other UV mappings), there are currently no V3 or M3 UV sets available for it. So you could transfer the shape of your characters, but not the textures. That woulld need either finding an equivalent set of V4 textures, or converting the V3 ones to V4 mapping with something like Texture Converter.

    David,

As a Poser Pro 2012 User I have been really Leary of the whole DSON installer and such after reading about all the problems but your explanation sounds far simpler and has convinced me to give it a try. Thanks.

I generally make it a point to thank all the members that post their awesome freebies here for all of us, but having been out of the look for a week I have seen a huge amount of freebies, so I am sorry for this one since I usually tank everyone by name but with so many I am issuing a collective "THANK YOU!!" to everyone for their submissions. I huge thanks goes out to Paul (Don't call me PD) for his work on cleaning up and streamlining the list of freebies we all have come to depend on and point everyone to when they ask about a freebie. You all are truly awesome and I am still have the suit to get finished that I have shown here, but I am waiting for Paul to finish his first MU comic before I ask him to help me with the DS mats for it. Once we have those done it will be released in all of its glory as my first designed by me freebie with others to follow I hope. Thanks to Paul, Matty and Mylochka for the inspiration to build a freebie to share.

    See the readme.

But in short, in order to work correctly in DS or Poser, the model would have to be remapped.

In the Ships ofthe Line thread I added a file that has 3D Studio Max renders of the ship so if you want to use the maps or remap the ship you have a reference. Its listed just below the link for the ship itself.

Understood. I'll have a go at recreating the proper texturing anyway, though. I almost got it right with one of the Defiant models a while back (before you came out with the conversion at F3D) so we'll see. Maybe I know what I'm doing now...

I honestly tried resurfacing the model in Carrara by giving each major piece of the hull its own surface but even that backfired as textures would appear curved. Texturing and mapping is not my strong point so I dont really know what needs to be done to improve the model. But at least it looks better then the first time it was converted.
