  • boisselazon: It will be the same quality as the Rex at around 150-200K poly. The high poly version of these models is over 30 million, but that's just to create a highly detailed normal map. Once the product is finished with all the maps, you can't really tell a difference between the high and low versions.

  • That Dakotaraptor is really impressive. I would think if you do 2 colour options you could have a brownish ('normal dinosaur colour'/female) and go really bright for a second (?male) colour with display colours on the forearms.

    can you make them Carrara compatible?

    ie.. so the rigging stays attached to the model when posing?

    Herschel,  I have been playing quite a bit with the new rex and if I might, as a modeler myself, make a couple of suggestions for the next figures. One would be different material zones for the teeth, the eyes, the mouth and the claws. For detailed renders or closeups, these areas should have different settings, teeth are different from scaley skin and the inside of the mouth is different from the eyes. I would also think the eyes should be higher definition and on their own texture, especially once you start playing around with IRAY settings and come up  with quility settings for just the eyes. Last but not least, I notice there is a ton of open space on the texture map, any chance of making it more efficient, tighter knit and more organized? Not trying to take away from a great model, just some suggestions since I work with alot of game models and have been told these exact things (and more, LOL) about my models in the past.

    FSMCDesigns: Thanks for the feedback. The size of the texture for the eyes (on the rex) was noticed after all the work was done. The eyes themselves are small on the rex so not a big deal but indeed lesson learned. The texture islands for the eyes on the Dakotaraptor are much larger than needed so no worries there. I'm a little confused by what you're saying about seperating the textures- do you mean seperated islands on the texture map or different texture maps per bodypart/area? UV mapping is a skill I'm still learning so the island layouts and slicing will get better with each model.

    Doesn't have to be separate maps...but definitely separate material zones.

    If you take a look at some of the Daz figures, like Genesis 3, you'll notice that the arms and finger nails are all on the same map, but if you look at the surfaces, there are separate 'material zones' for them.  So the fingernails can be changed out without having to change the rest of the arm, too.

    Ok, gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up. I'll have to educate myself on these but will incorporate them in future models and if possible, I'll update the rex as well.

    Yes I would second the material zone thing :) If you look at some of dinorauls dinos its how he does it. so in the material  drop down you can select the diffrent parts and apply materials individualy. Another thing that may be useful for the future is the easy pose option in such things as feet tongues and epsecially  tails etc  so they can be posed more  easily.

    Not complaing and realise you are on a learning curve doing this. Looking forward to more of your great dinos keep up the good work !

    I know this may not help for some but if you are familiar with the Layered Image Editor you can do some pretty amazing things. I changed his eye colors and added some reddness around his eyes. This was quickly done - I could do better but it's not even daylight out yet and I haven't finished my coffee.

    I am aware of, but have never directly used L.I.E. but need to play with it. The alternative, as I've done here, is to find the textures, open them in Photoshop and have some fun. 

    This guy got a black skin and some corporate tattoos.

    Agreed and great render, I like the red!

    Here's one I did last night. I thought about trying postwork to make it more gory, but left it alone since I suck at postwork anyway, LOL.

    he certianly has lots of character. In this image It looks like he is thinking "wow, look what I found, and it's mine, all mine!" "Now to see if anyone is around before I chow down" LOL

    I have bought so many dinosaur models for DAZ/Poser over the years I'm embarrassed to admit it (I mean dozens). But I have to say one look at your guy and he is one of the best ever; he was bought and paid for on the spot! Love him! I know you have mentioned he was made specifically for DAZ studio and hasn't been tested in other programs, but I hoped he might be able to be ported to Poser through the Dson importer. I've given it a try, but while he imports okay none of the poses work in Poser, and the rigging doesn't seem to work there either. I wondered if anyone else has had better luck porting over to Poser? If not, it looks like he might be staying in my Daz runtime exclusively.

    p.s. Very excited to see Dakotaraptor and Carcharodontosaurus on your list. I wondered if Deltadromeous might appear in the N.African biome too?

    Some Apatosaurs would be great too. An emaciated morph to thin a character model out through a starving theme would also be appreciated. 

    Planning a Megalodon any time soon? There's a great Meg and Great White product by AM, but it is now dated and needs a new iRay/3Delight skin. some new morphs would eb good too. Are you planning on a shark model any time soon?

    Thanks for the cool T-Rex, I couldn't resist any longer and picked him up during the catch up sale.  

    Adimittedly I'm not knowledgeable about dinos, but I am wondering about the poses provided.  They all seem to have T-Rex leaning forward with the apparent Center of Gravity well forward of the centerline of the hips.   This would seem appropriate in posing an attack but what about when at rest or just normal walking, wouldn't a posture with the CG more centered over the hips be expected?  Just curious, no biggy.

    TRex has a lot of rigging, you can certainly change the pose. Don't think the CG is ever going to be centered over the hips. Current science says Herschel's postures are correct.

    I love the details. Here is a relatively quick image, with just defalt textures and pose that comes with the King. Post work included a slight haze and slight increase in saturation but otherwise I did nothing to the mats and rendered in Iray.

    Its not recommended to ride bareback, but as long as you feed them first, its generally safe.

    I took my TRex to The Library. We did a marketing shoot for a friend's upcoming book promo. It's not perfect but it was fun. It's hard to light a 5-ton dinosaur in a tight space! And he's not toilet trained yet. He kind of made a mess in the newspaper section. He thought those were for him. Sorry, Jack!

    As said by others, I'm enjoying this model a lot... but I will not buy any further models without sensibly laid out material zones.

    Like, what if I want shiny eyes? Well, thankfully, the eyes are on a different surface group, so I could separate them out in geometry editor. But the teeth? If I want yellow teeth? They are part of the upper head group. I can't separate them without some exhaustive fiddling.

    But... it's a beautiful figure.
