Last minute (as ever!). I'm hoping that I'll be able to hear some bitterns this year, though they are shy and rarely seen. We have a good reserve with bitterns about 50 miles away. The only spanner in the works is possible medical problems - oh well...

I couldn't get done what I wanted; DS is acting very strangely, but I've finally got one done and sent it off, now I'm going to bed.
    Hope its in on time.

It is a stunning image, lovely. Makes you wonder what it has spotted, Did you do some postwork on the feathers scorpio64dragon? Very soft feel, lovely.

Well, the contest is closed and today I'll be handing it over to the judges. With a total of 26 images, a wide diversity in theme and some truly stunning work, I glad I'm not a judge. They have there work cut out for them!

I know I'm thanked many of the entrants personally for their entries, but let me take this moment again to thank everyone for supporting my bird series over the years. I know birds, at best, are an afterthought when creating a 3D image, this contest was created to help change that perception.

And thanks for running this. I had 'birds' on my list... not talking about my 'lifetime list' ;) but my 3d list and this contest poked me into getting off my duff! Yes, birds are all around us all the time. Most of the time just those little things in the distant, visually. However, having birds in scene renders adds another level of realism.

So, thanks for doing the contest and thanks for your model work.

Again it's all part of my evil plot... people get the bird sets, use them more and more in their renders, then start actually wanting to know about the real-life counterparts they are rendering. In reading my Field Guides, they find out that many birds are threatened and that we have lost 60-90% of the world's bird populations since 1960 and in turn start making more "green" choices. And why are birds so important anyways? Check my wiki for that. You'll hear a lot much about this when I do my Audubon's Birthday sale.

Thanks Ken and Szark. Ken I find your models a joy to work with.
Szark there is some postwork on the feathers, but not much.
Kickair I love the Dodo's, and Szark is yours the Kakapo, its beautifully done.

    Good luck to all.

Thank you scorpio64dragon...well it's very nice postwork to me. I did a a bit on the top of the Kakapo's legs and faces. I was really happy how the faces turned out

I had an idea the other day when watching one of the hair plug-in vids which is making feathers with the plug-in and I can't say for sure as I can't run either but I reakon we could make feathers or at least the illusion of.

Yes indeed good luck everyone...I always mean it...honest I do.... ;)

I wanted to say that to me the bird models are so nicely crafted they hold up very well as central subjects for 3d images. There were great renders for this contestand I am honored to have been able to participate. I learned a lot from looking at the other entries.

That's a good evil plot. I think it has worked. We are now in the RSPB and go out to reserves. One is about 20mins walk uphill from home, another strangely next to a nuclear power station and a third you have to drive in very, very slowly as the marshland birds are unafraid of cars but scared of people. We don't have all the fancy lenses for our cameras though.

the white smokes billows, but a cardinal wasn't picked...

First let me personally thank everyone for entering my annual bird imagery contest and supporting my 3D bird series. One of the hardest things I have to do throughout the year is to announce the prize winners. I know many of you worked very hard on the images and this year I think there were far more images deserving on awards than I had slots for. Lines have to be drawn somewhere and that’s why I have judges.

About the judging… Each judge was asked to pick 5 choices. The choices were weighed, 1st place getting 10 points, 2nd getting 7, 3rd=5, 4th=3 and 5th= 1 point. Once all 5 judges entered their votes, the totals were tallied.

I voted the moment the contest closed; my vote was to be used in the event of a tie. Fortunately the only ties were in honorable mention category and me not wanting to bump someone off the HM list, I simply added an extra slot this year.

For those of you didn’t make the judges final cut, it may be of comfort to know the 2/3 of the entries receive some form of recognition from the judges.

My judges have not disappointed me and once again have given greatly varied final vote.

    Drum Roll please…

Grand Prize: #16 Plight of the Kakapo by Szark
1st Prize: #07 Okay, seriously....what is it? by Kat Briggs
2nd Prize: #13 Days Ending by Stezza
3rd Prize: #04 Is it Safe? by Draagonstorm

    Honorable Mentions:
#01 Carcere intra carcerem by HeadWax
    #03 Small Wonders by JK0011
    #14 Mates by sdorsey
#18 Bird in Paradise by xmasrose
    #22 Australian Rainforest by LycanthropeX
    #24 Pueo by scorpio64dragon

Prize winners will be receiving an email from me later today with the details of their prizes. Thank-you everyone again for entering and hope to see you all again next year.

It seems appropriate that I share some of the judges comments...

from the Art Gallery owners "It was more fun this time because Bob kept asking if they were real life paintings. Had to keep telling him no they are computer generated... they are all very good. All have different styles and some have more abstract ideas."

from Audubon California "So many images were so creative this year. It was hard to chose just five."
