I bought the squirrels the instant I saw them, at 7:40 am this morning, together with Stefan "Stonemason" Morrell's Willow Creek so they will have somewhere to play.  It'll be a few days before I have enough time to do them justice but expect jpegs.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

I don't recognize any of these squirrels. Will there be a pack for the Western Hemisphere soon? What other rodents are planned?

Pretty sure the European grey squirrel is an Eastern grey squirrel which is originally from North America.

That is correct, classed as vermin Invasive species here.

Really? I have too many squirrels in my yard here in Florida(sad) and I think they are Eastern Grays. They don't have those long tufts of fur on the ears. That is why I thought those in the promos were different.

No, I was a little surprised by those ear-tufts too. I live in the UK and we have lots of (imported vermin) grey squirrels where I live and they all have the rounded ears like your photo samples. There is a colony of (native) reds about 40 miles away and they have the tufts. I wonder if the greys in other parts of Eurasia are different from our "ex-pat-Americans"? Anyway I love the reds and I can live with those grey tufts (or maybe reduce them in LAMH).

Looking forward to more rodents, Alessandro!

Not a worry, if you need to hide the tufts it's very easy, just hide the LAMH Group 2 as displayed here...

  • Googling images shows both kinds.  Some have HUGE tufts on their little ears!  LOL

Great! All three products are in my cart now.

Yeah,  and here in the UK the red squirrels got on the campaign trail

Sitting in my cart right now, even though I have the old DAZ squirrel and have barely used it, as I really love this concept.  The thing that I'm most looking forward to are the rats, mice and rabbits, as we’ve badly needed  more up to date models for all these critters for quite a while now.

I was surprised not to see gerbils on the list, as they’re one of the most popular pet rodent species and physically quite different from Hamsters.  On the other hand, guinea pigs and capybaras (as well the related Nutria) are all similar enough that it would seem practical to do them as a set ala the squirrels and rat/mice.   I’d also suggest looking at a basic marmot package with Groundhog/wood-chucks, and a ground squirrel package for Gophers and Prairie Dogs.

I can see we'll soon have hundreds of dollars worth of rodents infesting our runtimes.

Tree rats.         pretty tree rats, but still tree rats.    We like our proper red squirrels.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/oct/13/red-squirrels-wales-protected-military-style-strategy-ogwen-valley

Serves you right for sticking us with your darn sparrows, pigeons and rock stars. :P

I want the polymorph rodent but not sure about that squirrel addon.  Once I finalize what I want that rodent will be mine.

Edit stupid question the current squirrel pack are not for the squirrels in my back yard but they are for European squirrels, right?  Not planning to need any European squirrels anytime soon.

There is also American Red Squirrel and the very big Fox Suirrel but they can be created by altering the size and fur colors.

How do I get his fur to render in Iray? Did I miss some instructions in all the excitement? Oh, I see there  is a video in the first post. I must be blind. I'll go watch it now.

Well, I finally got through all the stuff necessary to render the squirrel in Iray. Once all that was done (export Fiberhair, change surface settings, save file), it rendered very very fast. But, I have some questions. I'm not sure if this should take so long and create such huge files.

    1. How can I control where the Fiberhair gets exported? By default it goes on my C drive SSD. I don't want gigabytes of exported fiber hair on my SSD. One squirrel was almost .5 GB.
    2. It took several minutes to export the Fiberhair. Is that normal?
    3. It took 1.5 minutes just to save the scene with only 1 squirrel and one tree trunk. Is that normal?
    4. The saved scene file is 206 MB. That is huge! Is that normal?

There's a compression setting at some point in the Fiberhair save procedure, try that.

I'm afraid so, I usually just sit back and read something while I'm waiting.

These two are probably related. Did you try saving the Fiberhair props as Prop Assets? If you don't do that, the prop will be saved as a supplemental part of your scene file, causing its file size to go wheeewayupthere. Gotchas to watch for are the prop is fixed and unposable, so it'll only be useable in that scene. And the Fiberhair object is slightly huge anyway (but not as huge as if you'd saved the hair as an .obj), all that file size has to go somewhere. Your choice whether you want it in the scene file or in the /data/ folder.

One thing you can do is just not save the scene with Fiberhair — do all your scene setup and posing, save it with the LaMH hair, then convert to Fiberhair. You'll have the extra bother of redoing the export every time you want to use that scene, but it should save on ultramegahuge file saves in the long run.

@SpottedKitty thanks for your reply. I used the default compression value, which is the one shown in the instructional video. I did not save the exported fiberhair as prop assets. All my concern over the file sizes and slow processing is now overwhelmed by the fact that after closing my scene and DS and reopening it, all the fiberhair is GONE! It renders furless again. What is the point of saving a .25GB scene file if it can't even be reloaded? I wonder if this is happening to anyone else. Maybe I did something wrong. The error log says:

This digital squirrel is as troublesome as the real thing! sadThat is too much realism. I want a nice tame well behaved squirrel. laugh

Unfortunately I have to answer yes to all these questions. As you all know, there is no Iray hair primitive available to ease this process, and as it is now the conversion to OBJ is the only mean available to have geometry to render with Iray.
However I have decided to experiment my own way to make this process automatic and as fast as possible, with no interaction required; I will post news about my progress (or failure).

Tonight hopefully I can play with the rodent.  Wait the base figure does not cime with textures?

  • Tonight hopefully I can play with the rodent.  Wait the base figure does not cime with textures?

Nope it doesn't, it serves as base geometry to develop further characters. But obviously it comes with UV mapping so one can make his/her own textures.

Is the fiberhair supposed to be reloaded when the saved scene is reloaded? It does not for me. (See message above with log file errors).

I recommend a copy of The Times for situations like this. There's at least two hours good reading in every edition.

    Cheers,

You can't just walk away and do something else until the export is all done. You have to stay by the computer and respond periodically to dialogs telling you that a piece was exported. For the squirrel, there are 7 individual dialogs to be acknowledged during the fiberhair export.

I have to agree that's an annoyance. I will take some action soon to ease the IRay render on LAMH models.

    @Alessandro_AM

So happy you thought of the Carrara users with this model... morphs working and I can even open its mouth... yes

we don't have Squirrels in Australia but I bought it to support your efforts and in hope that a Possum morph may appear one day to use in your Aussie outback scene wink

here's a quick render of the little guy in Carrara 8.5 using Carrara hair.

    Thanks again

I love the renders so far. Stezza, very cool Carrera render!

I have been struggling with Iray conversion too, barbult. Lots of things went wrong, and it's so slow converting with five or six pieces.

Anyway, got this red squirrel to look OK, great fur! Close enough to US red squirrels I think. (He may have stolen the raspberry from a camper.)

Luci45, he looks very good. How much GPU memory does he take up? I have 6 GB GPU memory, and I couldn't render 2 squirrels without it falling over to CPU.

nice work Stezza, good to see some Carrara love here :)

great that the rodents work in Carrara too - thanks for that A.M.

here;s a render from the Carrara NPR thread.

    cheers
