    Here's a new style, performing all effects within Carrara itself - no post whatsoever.
    I know, it's strange... but true!

    Those are my Genesis Orcs I made using the Troll and MS Lycan along with a bunch of human tweaks. Damn things are roughly 7 feet tall.
    I used a pile of spot lights with cone effects to get the 'sketch-like' appearance - along with heavy saturation of lighting. I just watched the show on Frank Frazetta (linked to the feature-length movie in the Cripeman Tutorials thread) and was inspired to paint - but I don't have anything but my Warhammer 40K paints and Carrara, so....

    I think it's pretty neat, though, how I was able to end the page in a fade, even though the landscape surrounds in 360 degrees. I also am enjoying the mix of looks within the same render. BTW, that Walk across Water set, by First Bastion, is incredibly fun to work with. Very good product.

    Oh, and thanks to Evil Producer and his offerings, I simplified my approach to Rosie's hair - and it renders faster and better now. K.I.S.S. method prevails, once again!

    That's it.
    I'm gonna buy that book - or one (or more) like it. He and Vallejo, Royo and other fantasy artists have really inspired my art as I was growing up. What Frazetta was saying about drawing "it just came to me... I don't know how.." (you must watch the above, linked movie) happened to me at a young age - but for sculpting alabaster stone. (Translucent, White stone - really soft - for those who've never heard of it). My art teacher bought me a chunk of stone, a hammer and chisels, and let me loose. My first sculpture was a winged angel (nude, of course - I was a young man!) flying up out of a fluffy cloud. No comparison to someone like Frazetta - don't get me wrong - but I've always been an artist... all my life.

    I've always been a little jealous of sculptors no matter the medium. I think it's very cool to be able to pull a shape out of a block of stone or wood. I've sculpted in clay and done okay, but I've always been more of a pen and ink or paint kind of guy.


    P.S. Glad I could offer some help on the hair, Dart. That last pict really rocks.

    Some really great images here. I haven't posted any images in the Carrara forum since DAZ switched over to the new site, so I thought I'd share one. Genesis for the main figure and G4 for the Grrl in the crystal. It was fun figuring out how to do a crystal. Pretty simple to model, but the shaders got fairly complex - or I should probably say complex for me.

    Wow! That is really nice. I'd love to see more and hear about how you did the Grrl in the crystal...any particular issues with that?

    it is easy to do - just a glass texture on a box will work

    Greetings,

    here I need to explain something: I am also an author (FARCRY NOVELS, RUNES OF MAGIC, AZARYA etc.), so I like to use renderings to get into the story and to create covers and other stuff like promo videos.

    This one is from my novel RUNES OF MAGIC - ISZMA. I used it for the illustration to talk to the artist, who did the real cover. But the most important thing was to get into the characters and those images were most helpful.

    Well, the second one is cover of my latest ebook, AZARYA.

    The other stuff is material from the facebook page for AZARYA (http://www.facebook.com/AzaryaNovel). I used the banners to give a look and feel to my readers.

    I prefer working with transparent png layers so I can rearrange stuff.

    This one was done with rendered png series and then some post in Premiere CS6.

    Yep, that would be a good place to start. :) I guess I should have been more specific; specific shader settings, the shape of the crystal, etc. would give dramatically differing results.

    I'll try to play around with this idea today.

    Personally, I think the darkness works excellently here. The scene does have a nice painted feel to most of it...just the leaping hero loses a bit of that effect and ends up sticking out too much.

    Overall, it's better than what I'd come up with though.

    Man. Frank is still inspiring us! Cool.
    ... and he seems to have gotten us both to do something that we normally would not have done - and the results are great!

    Glad to see you (and your cool renders) back in the scene. I really like this last piece. For me, that Genesis girl really sweeps me away. The outfit is perfect, too. That crystal looks really Really nice. I know exactly what you mean by the complexity of tweaking - especially when you're going for a particular effect, look and feel. From what I can see... you nailed it!
    Back a few pages (Post #575) , we have been blessed with the fine works of Koukotsu, who has also been MIA for some time. Wow. Just looking for that post made me realize that I missed a huge number of great renders in here. Gonna have to go through the whole thread again and look at them all. Fine job everyone!

    That's cool how you use renders both for your own inspiration and to help direct your ideas to an illustrator. Very cool.
    By the way, I really like your renders. You certainly have a knack for capturing 'Passion' within an image. The colors and their saturation levels really help to heighten the emotion. Really neat!

    Some very nice stuff! Love the Frazetta stuff. Here's one I did a couple years ago that was inspired by Frazetta. I may have to try and come up with a new one. Depends on what I have time for. I have lines to memorize.

    That's what I'm talkin' about!
    When I first started checking out the "Post your Renders" thread in the old forums, EP was putting out stuff like this - showing off his eye for detail and ability to maximize use of volumetric clouds and lighting... being intercepted by new sexy renders from Koutsuko - which can just melt you where you stand.

    Frazetta is an excellent source of inspiration.

    I haven't done that in years - but we have a famous, retired broadway director living in our midst, here, who has decided to turn his barn into a really nice theater, which he mostly uses for teaching. I've done one of his huge performances of the Christmas Carrol, where I played many parts in addition to Nephew Fred - who was my main character. Lots of fun.

    I haven't done that in years - but we have a famous, retired broadway director living in our midst, here, who has decided to turn his barn into a really nice theater, which he mostly uses for teaching. I've done one of his huge performances of the Christmas Carrol, where I played many parts in addition to Nephew Fred - who was my main character. Lots of fun.


    Yep! I am a community theatre actor- Which means I haven't been "discovered" yet! ;-) Actually, the only things I haven't done yet with our group is direct, stage manage or light.


    We have a show in mid Feb. It's a farce. Should be pretty funny. Stupid, but funny.

    Thanks! This was an undefined idea I had for years - actually started working on it in C4 (yep, I'm that slow). I'd work on it, work on getting the crystal shaders "right", put it away for months/years, get the idea again, repeat as needed. When I got the Mage outfit for Genesis, the final idea finally popped into my head, and this was the result.

    Getting the Grrl in the Crystal was easy enough, I just scaled her down, and made sure no parts were poking through. I made the crystal from a 6 side cylinder, modified to be asymmetric and scaled down the loop edges to make the top. I wanted a look that was more like a natural quartz crystal, they typically are somewhat cloudy from inclusions in the quartz. I used a modified calm water complex shader, it gave me good results to work off of. For the surface imperfections, I used fractal noise in the bump channel. The interior of the crystal was still to clean and clear, it looked fine empty, but with anything inside I just couldn't get the right effect from the surface shaders. Finally, it clicked that all I needed to do was put some fog in the crystal (after countless hours of shader tweaking). That was the key to getting the effect I wanted. Then it was just a matter of adjusting everything to get the lighting inside the crystal like I wanted it, where it would illuminate/highlight her face. This was just a matter of adjusting the surface transparency, translucence in conjunction with fog density.and light placement. I also found that enabling blurry reflections improved the overall effect as well.

    I really like the way the crystal on the staff turned out. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly how I did it, most of the setup I did several months ago. I do remember that the effect is a combination of the shaders on the crystal, and the shaders on an object inside it. I just revisited it to test the speed of my new computer (render time went from about 11 hours to 2 hours - Wohooo!!), and make some minor changes in the pose for the large figure.

    I've attached an image of the basic shader set up, let me know if you have any other questions.

    Just for an additional two cents on fog effects:
    Cripeman has an informative little tutorial on using bulb lights (whose light affects nothing) with a glow effect to create steam (he puts the bulb in a particle system!!!). Using this sort of idea can really further one's range of trying to get 'foggy' effects when one or more of the obvious solutions don't seem to work for you. I find myself using light cone effects quite a bit - but there's a lot of tools within Carrara to do different things.

    Very good write-up on how you pulled this off, Dustman. And that crystal does look like quartz! ;)

    Cool! My grandfather started Dundas Little Theatre (Dundas is at the south-western tip of Lake Ontario). I have a lot of acting on my dad's side of the family. My great-great-great uncle was Lionel Belmore - he was in the original Frankestein with Boris Karloff.

    That is just awesome! Now that I have put out a few fires at work; I think I'll settle down for some Carrara-time and try to see what I come up with using your tricks.

    It was a great movie. But I still recall thinking, "I'm related to that?" when Lionel appeared. His role was "Town Burgomeister" but it could have also simply been "Town." :lol:

    I could also see the family resemblance though - fortunately, I've been hitting the gym for the last few years... ;)

    Stu's work was incredible. I doff my cap to him.

    I'm working on creating a quartz crystal similar to what Dustrider built. I confess that I'm using LightWave though - please don't hate me or kick me out of the club!
