There's another factor worth considering besides render times: how quickly you can move around in a scene you're constructing.

For info, there are some special settings that can make moving around in a scene in Iray view mode much faster. And in my experience, navigating in the 3D Iray view is less about the GPU and equally about the CPU. I've never quite figured it out, but I suppose there's a lot of interaction between the GPU (doing the Iray calcs) and the D|S user interface software updating being run by the CPU.

You may be right about the CPU/GPU split in iRay view mode, but having a second (and in this case faster) card, definitely speeds up scene navigation. Faster render times are gravy on top as far as I'm concerned: I can go do something else while a scene is rendering; I can't do anything else while it's a-building.smiley

( One thing that hasn't improved as far as I can tell is the time it takes to load a scene. I had hoped that maxing out my system RAM would help some, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Oh well. I take a daily multivitamin too, though I can't see that it makes any difference either. )

I just bought a GTX 1070 ti it can render small scenes usually in about 1min I cant imagine needing much faster and it was only £20 more than the 1070, but has nearly as many CUda cores as the GTX 1080-it depends if you do big scenes you may need 11gb ram on the GTX1080ti.

You might want to download the Sickleyield benchmark scene and give it a render with your 1070ti. I don't think anyone has posted results for the 1070ti yet, though I have checked the thread in a while.

Where can I get the Sickleyield benchmark thread i cant find it

Iray Starter Scene: Post Your Benchmarks!

  • Thanks I got that tested. For anyone who wants to know 2mins 30 secs I ran it to 95% it looked done. 100% was 4mins 50 secs but looked the same as 95%.

    CPU i7 4700 .GPU Nvidia GTX 1070ti

  • That's actually really slow. Are you counting the time it took to load the scene into VRAM?

Looks like Newegg is totally out of stock on 1080ti's, except for a single FE that costs $1,200. And I'm assuming FE units are in low demand cuz single fan. Amazing.

If by "land of maple syrup and bacon" you mean Canada, that price sounds like gouging. I'm in BC, and I got my ASUS 1080 GTX TI locally for $1045 Cdn (plus tax, of course).

...yeah, seems when there is a shortage prices go up.  A few months ago during the cryptomining craze, people were snapping up 1070s and, for some of the prices I was seeing, you could get a 1080 Ti and even have change in your pocket.

  • The prices have skyrocketed insanely. I got mine for less than 800 USD and even that was a bit high.

...I remember when they were around 700$ at Newegg.

Guess that means the Volta cards might be on the way.

In the meantime even though it is last generation, 12 GB Maxwell Titian Xs are going for as low as 500$ on ebay.

There is one in stock at newegg,ca for ~1724.63 after tax, cheapest one I see at amazon.ca is 1603.90 after taxes, so a few cheaper ones have popped up. The only one that was up when I looked before would be 2035.06, my guetimate at tax was a bit hight it seems, I was guessing more like 2200.

I paid 633.40 for my 1070, if I had known I would have another job pop up 3 days after ordering, I would have waited and went for the 1080 instead, sometimes it sucks to run your own business lol. Oh well, I do OK with my 960+1070 combo for now.

Wow, I just looked at the card I got, https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01GXOX2BU/ref=pe_386430_121528420_TE_dp_1  ; and it more than doubled in price since I bought it O.O   1,410.08 that is just insane
