How about the soft lights, which is what I'm using at the present time? Do they perform like point lights? I don't see any indication in the AuxView Port of where they are pointing.
But, I guess it's legitimate to combine these lights with others, right? I did turn off the dome, just to render with lights. In one scene, I tried to use one soft light for a reclining character and another for a kneeling character. Though I made sure to put a soft light right around the kneeling character, I could not get him lit well enough. So I created a spotlight, added some color to it, sized it, pumped up the lumens, and aimed the spot just at the character. That worked.
But, any Tip or Tips about how to ensure that a soft light will illuminate just the character or spot I would want to illuminate?
Is there any way you could work out a Light Pointer for this set, as you did for the Rim Light Rig Set? The Pointer would show where most light would fall. Also very useful would be a Mask Pointer, which would show the center of the area wherein the light would fall. If you can't, OK. Just some thoughts about what I'd like to see.
Seeing that "light and darkness" style reminded me of a selfportait by Giorgione which is eshibited in my birthtown's art museum in Braunschweig (Brunswick, Germany, for englishers) which also uses extreme contrast of dark and illuminated areas. Giorgione, who lived quite a while before Caravaggio, seems to have used this on a couple of portraits he did, as did several other famous painters of his time (and even the Byzantians way before them; so there's nothing new under the sun it seems.. every wave rolls on the beach again and again over the centuries)
Yep, around and around we go. His name is familiar, we probably covered him in art history class. I wasn't aware of the connection to this style throughout time though. Now it can continue in the 3D world. Thanks for sharing/posting maikdecker!
His portrait is very interesting- how soft and light the face was painted.
I just used the soft light with rig to defeat pixilation. Worked great!

Too bad it’s iray only... you can get the chiaroscuro look in 3dl, but it’s a time consuming process, with lots of trial and error and tweaking.. if this were a 3dl product, I’d buy it in a heartbeat, as it looks incredibly useful..
Thats a really nice piece hacsart. I feel like Reflective Radiance and invisible primitives (using phantom and out of focus images applied) would get close to the Soft Light Presets of this set.
Thanks Marshian...
I do have the RR3 set, and as you say invisible primitives as emitters work a treat.. That pic I posted has 14 Linear point lights and one AoA advanced ambient..
This set is amazing. I did a quick out-of-the-box test to make sure it worked (I didn't even read the readme!) and I got the attached image. The whole thing took 3 minutes to set up and no more than ten minutes to render - and I'm using a laptop!!
I can't wait to really dig into this set and see what I can do.
@marshian I'm using the soft light in parts of the scene, but the props aren't completely invisible. I'm getting fireflies as you can see in the render. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a way to get rid of them other than moving them out of the scene like with the sharp props?
Very nice set of lights. I am glad, I have grabbed it during the recent sale.
Rendering Time: 45 minutes 54 seconds on GTX 1080.
